"Doctor," said Mr. Darling, wringing his hands, "there must be something you can do!"

The elderly physician merely shook his head, putting away his things in his bag. "I am sorry. It's too far along. The best that can be done is keep her comfortable."

"Comfortable?" he hissed angrily. "She's raving mad! Listen to her, Doctor!"

"A fever dream, nothing more."

As the men had spoken, Mrs. Darling had sat at her only daughter's side, mopping her small brow tenderly with a cool cloth. Wendy tossed and turned in discomfort, sweating profusely and gasping for air. The lung fever had taken its hold.

"It's Neverland!" she choked out. "Oh, Peter Pan! I'm flying...Flying so high, Peter!"

Wendy did not survive the night.
