Part One
Chapter One
Davey's POV
It was a nice morning in Manhattan. The sun was already out and when I walked outside, I didn't immediately feel overheated, which was pretty good considering it was mid-July in New York. Most of the newsies were already out selling papes, but there was one who wasn't there.
"Hey, Mush!" I called to one of the boys carrying papers. He walked over. "Where's Jack?"
Mush nodded to his left. I turned and saw Jack talking to some girl. She looked worried and was shaking her head. she looked like she needed help. Jack seemed to be trying to calm her down. He took her by the shoulders and told her something. Then she nodded in agreeance and then she turned and left. Jack turned and saw Mush and I. He rolled his eyes a little and jogged over to us.
"Is she ok?" Mush asked.
"No.." Jack replied "If she was she wouldn't be try'n to leave."
Mush nodded then looked up slowly.
"We should probably go sell some papes" he said changing the subject. I wasn't ready to change the subject.
Jack and I decided to partner up and sell papers for the day. I was determined to know who that girl was and why she was trying to leave.
"Jack…" I started "Who was that girl you were talking to earlier today?"
He looked at me like he was deciding whether to tell me or not, then he opened his mouth.
"Her name is Audrey." he began " She's a close friend of mine."
"Oh" was the first thing that came out of my mouth. Out of anything I could have responded with, it was oh.
"Her dad's a high power banker...has her whole life planned out for her"
"She doesn't want that, does she?"
"Not at all"
"And that's why she's trying to leave?"
"Exactly"
"Can't we try to help her?"
"Already have. Her dad found out. He's threatened everyone here that if they try to change her path, they'll face the consequences."
"Oh" there it was again. " How come I've never seen her before?"
"When we had the strike, her dad refused to let anyone leave. He was on Pulitzer's side and thought she would try to help us. This is the first time I've seen her since before the strike."
"Oh" I really need a better vocabulary.
"Hey, why you so interested in her, anyway?" Jack perked up. "You like her, don't you." He didn't ask, he knew.
"Well...I...I mean...I… I guess...maybe I like her...I don't know" Truth be told I was attracted to her. There was something about her. I there was something I felt when I looked at her.
"I'm seeing her later, you should come." Jack smiled. He was planning something.
"I'd hate to impose." I replied.
"You're coming."
"Fine" I sighed.
"Good. You two would look nice with each other." Jack smirked.
