Brooklyn, New York

July 6th, 23: 39 EDT

"Batman, are you sure about this?" Asked Superman hesitantly.

"Positive," the Dark Knight replied. They both stood side by side, observing the one-story house that held New York's resident hero and if she agreed, a member of the team of young heroes.

He grimaced and shook his head focusing more on the new member rather than the past few nights.

Superman was curious about the hero. He heard she appeared around last year during the summer and was a pyrokinetic (unfortunately for J'onn). He would like to say that she's doing a good job in protecting New York, but it was obvious that she needed some work. Over the past year, twenty-four buildings have been burnt down because of her. He knew, he helped rebuild them.

Which was why he was curious why Batman wanted her on the team.

Batman knocked on the door. The old door creaked to reveal an even older woman in her late sixties. Despite her gray almost white, she stood straight and tall making her green eyes seem sharper than they actually were. She barely reached his shoulder but Superman felt tiny under her sharp gaze and swallowed a gulp.

'This is her grandma,' he figured. Veronica Chase, a former sergeant from the military. He saw the pictures and he would like to say that she looked the same, but the picture didn't capture the scariness of her eyes.

She took one look at them and sighed as if the world was collapsing.

"What did she do now?" She asked in annoyance. Superman stared at her but Batman wasn't fazed.

"We would like to speak to your granddaughter," Batman requested as if he hasn't heard her. She rolled her eyes.

"Remy! Get your ass down here!" She roared with the lungs of a lion. He heard loud padding of footsteps as New York's hero echoed through the house.

"Yeah?" Remy asked and then her brown eyes widened at the sight of the two Justice League heroes.

"Woah."

Out of her costume, she looked completely different to the point where it even shocked him since he daylighted as nerdy reporter Clark Kent. Her hair was a fiery shade of red but seemed dim and pale due to the fact that it was messy but not in a wild, sexy way, more like she hasn't had a bath for months. She wore oversized hoodies and baggy pants and she had a horrible hunch making her look meek and tiny like a cornered mouse.

He never would've guessed that she was Heatstroke if Batman hadn't told him.

"Remy?" Superman asked to make sure. Remy opened her mouth like she wanted to say something, but she clamped it shut again. She opened it again and clamped it shut again. If he wasn't so uncomfortable, he would've found it hilarious.

"Dumbass, say something!" Veronica snapped.

"Oh! Uh... Right!" Remy stammered and cleared her throat. She opened her mouth and clamped it shut.

If Batman noticed this odd occurrence, he didn't say anything.

"I would like to offer you a proposal," he continued. Veronica nodded.

"Come in. I have a feeling this is going to take a while." She opened the door wider and shoved Remy out of the way so they could come in.

It was small but cozy, he noted when he stepped into their home, perfect for two people.

Veronica made a beeline for a brown armchair and gestured for the Justice League members to sit on the couch leaving Remy to stand awkwardly by her grandma's side.

"So, if she's not in trouble, why the hell are you here?" Veronica asked once they were seated.

"We're forming a small group of heroes to do covert missions for the League," Batman explained.

"We've been monitoring you for some time," Superman continued, "We've seen what you can do and we feel like you could do some good if you join."

Veronica snorted.

"Yeah right, she can barely shoot straight, she'll probably burn your base down before you go anywhere."

"That's why it'll be a good opportunity for her to join," Batman said without skipping a beat, "We have members of the Justice League who have experienced what you're experiencing and we can help."

It was then, Superman realized why the Dark Knight wanted her on the team. He wanted to keep an eye on her and make sure she wasn't a threat or wouldn't be one anyway.

Veronica hummed in agreement as she took in Batman's words.

"Well, what do you think?" She asked Remy. The redhead had been staring at the two heroes in a daze when Veronica asked her.

"Oh! Well... Um..." Veronica rolled her eyes.

"Get your head out of the clouds and concentrate! You're lucky enough they're considering you with all the places you've blitzed on," she grunted impatiently. Remy's shoulder's slumped and she nodded.

"You have two days to decide. Meet us at the Empire State Building once you've made your decision," said Batman curtly and stood up.

"Thank you for your time," added Superman with a gentle smile. Remy gave a crooked one back but otherwise still seemed either awestruck or terrified he couldn't tell.

"T-thank you," she said meekly. Batman nodded and they left.

"You're one sly bastard," Superman commented as he gazed down at New York. Such a big city and only one hero to take care of all of it. She was definitely going to need training.

"You say that like you're surprised," the Dark Knight replied smoothly. Superman pursed his lips.

"I think she'll be a good addition to the team. You know, considering you don't see her a threat to humanity," Superman scoffed, "For the love of God, Bruce. She's just a kid."

"So? I was just a kid when I first decided to get revenge," Batman shrugged. Superman rolled his eyes.

But he didn't disagree.
