Disclaimer : I don't own any of the Inuyasha cast, sadly.

Kagome was always prepared. First aid kit? Check. Textbooks? Check. Snacks for Shippo and ramen for Inuyasha? Check. Etc., etc.

Not once did she ever forget a thing.

Well, maybe a few times... but it was only when she was busy.

Sometimes.

Anyway. The point was, she was always ready to make her trip. Always ready to fight some more demons and solve a few mysteries here and there, help save some villages and townspeople.

But for once, Kagome found she was not prepared, because, as it turns out, she didn't bring anything to protect her heart.

From what, exactly? No, not sharp swords or blades or spells or even mind-control, if that could be counted, but rather, what she was not ready for was the painful heartbreak.

Her painful heartbreak.

But how was she supposed to know that Kikyo would be resurrected, that Inuyasha still harbored feelings for her, and that they would end up meeting secretly for so many times behind their backs? Behind her back?

Seeing those two together hurt enough, and even having to let her incarnation win because Inuyasha loved Kikyo and not her hurt even more - so much to the point that she cried in her sleep sometimes. But what could she do? If Inuyasha loved the woman, Kagome wouldn't stop him. It wasn't right of her to steal his happiness, especially if she wanted to prove that she truly did love the half-demon.

But witnessing Kikyo kiss the boy - and him equally returning the favor -

Well, it broke her heart into a million pieces.

It felt as if her heart had broken off into tiny fragments, scattered into the wind like the Shikon Jewel - leaving an unreparable and unreplaceable hole where it should have been.

After that, it was never the same.

She was never prepared. No matter how many distractions she brought, no matter how many lists of items she completed and checked off without a missing beat. No matter what she did, she was never prepared. Never.
