Ren was and always would be a sharp-tongued teen. The only reason he hung around Ryouma and Airu was because he enjoyed the freedom to initiate his own Hunts.
And because if Airu was any clingier, he might be sick with disgust.
He often went off on his own to Hunt some powerful Digimon. He had Hunted some real trophies, too. Ren didn't show off his collection much, but Ryouma was aware of the Mephismon and Garudamon he had Hunted.
Ren still remembered how he had been Hunting Gumdramon and failed at it, due to Tagiru earning his trust first.
At first, it had sickened Ren that not only had he lost Gumdramon, but Tagiru had been able to persuade Gumdramon's super-evolution to appear on the first try. And while the fight with MetalTyranomon occurred, Ren bristled with anger at his failure.
He vowed to become stronger than Tagiru, who had just started Hunting, as opposed to himself who had been doing it for six months already.
With that said, he would keep his distance from Airu, only letting Ryouma in close so he could discuss strategies with him. He wasn't particularly fussed with Airu, but neither did he dislike her.
In the end, Ren was the true lone wolf of the Rival Trio, not Ryouma as many thought.
