The Possibility
Seth had always been a hopeless romantic.
He had longed for a girl he didn't know existed.
Now, he longed for a girl he didn't know he would ever find, ever come across.
And that hurt even worse than the fact that he had to watch that kind of love every day of his existence. They didn't try to throw it in his face. They really couldn't help it. But it still stung his heart with every on looking kiss, with every sideways glance and every seemingly innocent touch.
He wanted that too.
He wanted that too much.
When his day finally came, he was walking along the park in Seattle in the unnaturally warm atmosphere, watching the children play with their parents. Watching teenagers sneak kisses when they thought no one was looking. He tried to remind himself of the possibilities. Waiting was just the hardest part.
Seth shoved his hands in his pockets and chose to look down upon the cement blocks he walked across.
That was when he heard her.
The sound pulled at his chest, almost as if she were a magnet and he a shiny piece of metal floating in the breeze.
She was crying, her hands clasped over her beating heart.
As though it were broken.
The feeling of seeing her for the first time sent him soaring into the unknown he had wanted for so long. But seeing those tears on her face also sent a thrilling shock deep down to his bones. And he was furious. As though fire were shut up inside of him.
Her long hair hung in front of her eyes, sticking to the tracks of her tears. Her reddened lips trembled and she kept walking, as though she would never turn back to what had brought on such pain.
Seth hurried; he would not lose her.
His hand fell lightly on her shoulder, and with a gasp she turned around to face him.
Her eyes were the color of sea glass in the sun, shining brightly up at him as the tears streamed like bits of rain down her cheeks. She looked wildly at him, as though she would crumple to the ground where they now stood, together.
"Excuse me," he stumbled over his words, "I'm really sorry, you just…look like you need someone."
Her eyes were question marks, and her bottom lip trembled once more before her teeth came out to catch it.
"That's very nice of you," she stammered the tiniest bit before going on, "I'm just having a bad day."
She went to turn away again, but he caught her hand gently and reveled in the feel of it against his own.
"Please, let me at least walk you to where you need to go," he smiled encouragingly, "You can tell me about it if you'd like."
She smiled then too and laughed, though it was garbled by tears, "Why would someone like you want to hear about a mundane thing such as my life?"
He took a big breath and said the first thing that came to mind.
"Because a beautiful girl like you shouldn't be crying like this over anything. And I'd like to find out what that anything is."
The answering look in her eyes was all he needed as he took her hand and walked her back home.
