Note: This story does not follow canon. Yes, I know that whole Nakaoji-knowing-Lei-isn't-Airi thing. But I thought this scenario would be funny..
Disclaimer: I wish I owned MeruPuri, but alas I do not.
Lei felt eyes upon him. Not for the first time that day, either. He swung round, his long auburn hair flying in what his observer probably found an alluring manner. Curses. He wasn't used to having such luxuriant tresses. Looking over to where he knew the eyes were sitting, he met with Nakaoji's gaze. This was the third day in a row he had had to endure the smirks of that commoner. What Airi had seen in him he could not understand. Trying to behave as much like her as possible, Lei sighed inwardly and sent the ghost of a hint of a smile back. Surely the spiky haired rogue couldn't possibly interpret that as encouragement?
Bzzz! The bell signalling the end of the day woke Lei from his reverie. Most of these reveries featured Queen Veedua, so he always felt slightly embarrassed when interrupted. By the time he had collected himself and was picking up his bag, the rest of the class had disappeared headlong out of the door. As he turned to leave a shape obstructed his path. Nakaoji stood before him, a cheery grin on his face.
"Hoshina? Could I talk to you for a minute?" Lei had to suppress the urge to turn and run; his royal training had however not been in vain and his self control was such that he even managed to bring a tired smile to his lips.
His admirer's eyes lit up with joy, though he also ran a hand through his hair rather nervously. He grinned again, this time perhaps a little sheepishly.
"Hoshina... Airi. The thing is, rumours have been going around that you and your boyfriend have – well, split up. If that's true, I'm sorry to spring this on you, but you must know that I still – really like you. I was wondering if you would like to go out with me sometime? Maybe we could go to the cinema or something?"
The pressure of acting like Airi was giving Lei a headache. Trying to copy her particular style of embarrassment, he made himself blush and smile prettily. Then he thought, Hang on, what am I doing? She can't get back and find herself going out with Nakaoji! She's married to Aram! But at the same time he knew that short of telling the truth there was no good reason why Airi would say no. Lei was stuck. As was Airi, though she didn't know it. Swanning around in Astale while I try and hold it together... and put up with this jerk! Nakaoji must have cottoned on to his confusion, because he said hastily, "Don't worry if you have to think about it. I'd just like you to consider it, that's all." He half turned away, but then looked back again. Airi's large eyes were still looking up at him, and he misread Lei's half-formed relief at his release for an invitation. Bending down slightly Nakaoji tried to kiss him lightly on the cheek, and Lei instinctively tried to move away. Unfortunately his sudden movement pressed his lips against his tormentor's. After looking surprised, Nakaoji seemed to conclude that Airi must have done it on purpose and kissed 'her' more seriously, winding his fingers into her hair. After a few moments Lei managed to half extricate himself. Pulling away as much as he could he slapped the boy's face, grabbed Airi's bag and dashed headlong out of the door, his hair and skirt flying.
Airi had better learn her magic pretty damn fast, because Lei could not take this any more.
