Trespass

I crept toward the bureau, careful to make no sounds; I knew just where to step to avoid the squeaky floorboard. Nobody was home at the moment, but anyone might come in… and if I got caught, I knew I'd be in big trouble!

I eased the drawer open and searched between the folded garments until my fingers encountered the cold steel. I picked it up by the handle. It was strangely heavy, as if the gun was reluctant to be held.

How many thousand times have I wished that I had put it back and pushed that drawer shut?
