Silenced Laughter

Batman hates laughter. All of it, be it a giggle, a chuckle, a guffaw, a scream.
It reminds him of The Joker.
A long, hard chill races up his spine whenever someone laughs.
Not only that, but he can't look around he can't live his lives and he can hardly breathe...
He'll see or hear or feel something that violently claws at his heart. Relentlessly.
Anything at all will send him back to a day when he was still cold. Back to a day when he was fixated with a madman that did nothing but dance circles around him, laughing gaily all the while. One man who's now dead.
Joy served as a reminder to him of what he had lost. A reminder that did nothing but nag and cling and smirk at him inside his head of, taunting him with what could have been.
Batman tries to forget the memories, the surreal flashes and the iridescent desires. He tries to block them out, to wash them away, to completely ignoring them.
And for a while he does. He becomes perfectly calm; there is no emotion, just the Bat.
But just when this continues on for more than a day, and he thinks he's fine and sane and completely capable of living breathing functioning without him, all the fantasies resurface all over again.
They had dueled for far, far too long for him to forget so quickly. Their rooftop escapades their false pleasantries their constant winding and twining until they spun a deadly web that neither could leave.
No one could interrupt their fighting for long either.
Not Selina, not Dick, not Tim. Not Jim, not Barbara.
Not Harley.
Certainly never Harley.
He tries and tries to cleanse his mind of the pallid white skin and jade hair and his desperate shining eyes, begging and pleading and bright with tears from joy and hateand PAIN and insanity.
And he fails. How he fails.
Because The bat he remembers. Everything. Feather touches flippant grins and suicidal missions. All that is gone. Dead.
Only the Bat remains. And he hates it.
