Leukemia Wins the War

By Maggie Davis

It was 7 o'clock in the morning. The sun was coming up but there was haze still about. It was the kind of day where you knew something wasn't right.

Her Mom came running up. "Its time, hurry or else it will be too late." Walking toward her. "But it can't be now its too soon." Race said thinking to him self "No, not now please not now." He was looking towards the sky.

"Just please hurry she wants to see you all. Get Spot. We're running out of time" With that she took off towards the hospital her only daughter was about to die.

Snoddy and Itey took off towards Brooklyn to find Spot.

"Come on boys deres gonna be no sellin' today." Jack ran to the hospital followed by Race, Mush, Skittery and Bumlets.

*Brooklyn*

"Wheahs Spot?" Snoddy asked

"Up dere, why do you want Spot?"

Itey turned and looked at the newsy.

"She's dying."

"Oh gosh, no it can't be true."

"Spot get down heah." Snoddy called

"Whad do you bummahs want?" Snoddy was a little nervous about telling Spot, so Itey jumped in.

"Spot, Danielle's dy-" He never got to finish his sentence. Spot was already halfway across the Bridge.

*At the Hospital*

Spot, Itey and Snoddy ran into the hospital there they found Newsies from all over New York. All that were there, had tears in each of there eyes."Why would you wanna take her away God? Why?" asked Mush. The door to her room opened her Mom came out."She's gone." thats all she could say. She walked out the door and into the streets. There was silence in the hall then reality hit. She was gone. More tears were shed among the newsies but there was peace Danielle was in anymore pain. Danielle was diagnosed with Leukemia 6 months ago. She had won a lot of battles along the way but Leukemia won the war.

In her room Race clutched her hand, never wanting to let go.

Skittery sat on her bed in disbelief.

Jack climbed out the window, his best friend just died he was now lost.

Spot fell to the ground, crying for the first time in his life. She was gone nothing mattered anymore.

Danielle's little time on earth taught all the newsies something. Race to believe in God, Skittery to face everyday with a positive attitude, Jack to forgive his father and mother. And for Spot to love again. Danielle will never be forgotten, her spirit and life will always be planted in each of their hearts. "Angel" is what they called her, and their angel she will always be.

In memory of my close friend Danny who died from Leukemia on March 15. We love you Danny.
