Her heart was beating so hard she thought it would burst out of her chest, her skin was covered in a cold sweat that mingled with the blood from the cuts over her body and her feet were sore and undoubtedly covered in blisters. She was running for her life, with a small beaten form cradled in her arms. She charged through the forest as hard and fast as her feet could carry her, but she was beginning to slow, she couldn't go on forever. Spying the red roof ahead just peeking out over the canopy as she crested a hill gave her a renewed burst of energy as she galloped down the hill. Tears formed in her eyes and trailed behind her, she couldn't hold back the uncontrollable sobs, especially when she heard the shrill cry of her pursuer. The form stirred softly in her arms, but she held onto it tightly, using her body as a last defence.
In a flurry of panic, she didn't see the rock that jutted out of the path. Her foot caught on it and she went reeling, hitting the ground with a thud. She tried to scramble to her feet, but it was too late, it was already here. The creature she had held had gone flying into the brush out of sight, she cried out, fearing the worst of her companion. However, when she looked over her shoulder, she saw the gleaming, hungry eyes of the pack that had been chasing her. The girl cried out in pain as they lashed forward, tearing into her without mercy. After a few minutes of her blood curdling cries, all went silent but for the grizzly snap of bone and squelch of fresh flesh in sharp teeth.
Out of harm's way, the little creature the girl had been protecting gathered enough strength to lift its head and see what was going on. Through a haze of exhaustion, disorientation and a blinding headache, it saw the decimation of its protector. It tried to cry out in protest, but its throat was burning and barely a squeak rose from its tiny mouth. The creature was paralyzed with fear, but forced its eyes shut so it didn't have to watch the rest of the grizzly feast.
It must have blacked out, because it awoke to a dark nights sky. It felt a little better now and tested its legs gingerly as it stepped out of the tall grass and into the path where the corpse of its protector now lay. It felt foggy headed, like too much static had filled a room and it made its fur stand on end. It looked at the bloodied and destroyed face of the girl that had saved him and a mixture of rage, fear and sorrow filled the little creatures heart. Finding its voice again, the little creature sat and sobbed into the night, mourning its friend.
