Chapter 1: The Cursed Beginning

Thebes. City of the Living, crown jewel of Pharaoh Seti I.

Home of Imhotep, Pharaoh's High Priest and Keeper of the Dead.

Birthplace of Anck-su-amun, Pharaoh's mistress. No other man was allowed to touch her.

But for their love, Imhotep and Anck-su-amun were willing to risk life itself.

They were caught by the Pharaoh himself. Together, they killed him. Anck-su-amun stalled for time as the priests got Imhotep. When the Medjai, Pharaoh's bodyguards, entered the room, coming to the Pharaoh's aid, finding him dead. Anck-su-amun killed herself, knowing that Imhotep would revive her.

To be able to, Imhotep and his priests broke into her crypt and stole her body. They raced deep into the desert with Anck-su-amun's corpse to Hammunaptra, city of the dead, ancient burial site for Sons of Pharaoh, resting place for the wealth of Egypt.

For his love, Imhotep dared the gods anger by going deep into the city and took the Black Book of the Dead from its holy resting place.

Anck-su-amun's soul had been sent to the dark realm of the Underworld. Her vital organs placed in five sacred jars.

Anck-su-amun's soul had come back from the dead. Before he could complete the ritual, Pharoah's bodyguards had followed Imhotep and stopped him.

Imhotep's priests were condemned to be mummified alive. As for Imhotep, he was condemned to the Hum-Dai, the worse of all ancient curses, one so horrible that it had never been used before.

He was to be remained sealed inside his sarcophagus as the undead for all of eternity. The Medjai would never allow him to be release. For he would arise a walking disease, a plague on humankind, a unholy flesh-eater with the strength of ages, power over the sands and the glory of invincibility.

For three thousand years, men have fought over this land where evil laid beneath it.

And for three thousand years, we, the Medjai, the descendants of Pharoah's sacred bodyguards, kept watched.
