Chuck exhales slowly, deliberately, trying in vain to silence his overactive frontal lobes as he sorts through the events of the previous night.

His mind returns again and again to Sarah's promise:

"I won't let anyone hurt you, Chuck."

And, just as soon as his mind brings up Sarah's words, his thoughts oscillate wildly to the shooting that occurred after she uttered that prophetic line.

Sarah sure kept her promise, all right.

Chuck is caught between two trains of thought, but he doesn't know which one to board.

He stands on the boarding platform between the two conflicting railways, torn between adoring Sarah for saving his life and fearing Sarah for killing someone and then lying about it to his face.

In the end, Chuck is grateful to be alive, and he has Sarah to thank for that. He fidgets nervously when she gives him a warm smile, and a part of him is still terrified.

He already knows that Sarah is a talented, trained CIA agent, but her actions tonight touch him in a deeper way.

Chuck is afraid of Sarah because of the very strength of her protectiveness and devotion, and of her apparent ability to hide it from him.

He knows that Sarah cares deeply for him, but tonight is concrete evidence that Sarah would literally do anything for him.

This knowledge toys with Chuck, tears him apart a little every time he thinks of Sarah's face when she shot the Fulcrum agent in that forest of Christmas trees.

He feels like he shouldn't have been there, like he was spying on someone who already has far too many secrets to count.

Chuck feels like a voyeur, but he can't tear his mind from the memory of the smoke curling up from the silencer on Sarah's gun, the resolute line of her mouth as she stares in disgust down at the Fulcrum agent.

Chuck wishes that he didn't see the shooting, but part of him is rejoicing.

He is overjoyed that Sarah feels so deeply for him, but he's still a little afraid of her methods.

When he finally focuses on the convenient fact that she is a trained CIA agent, her actions make a little more sense.

In a disturbing way, they are even a little sweet.

Above all, Sarah's sheer hatred of the man who dared to threaten Chuck is what moves him the most, but he'll never mention it to Sarah.

He knows that this will complicate his relationship with her and make him realize that there just might be something more to their cover romance, but Chuck doesn't care.

He will never bring this up again, but part of him can't help but wonder if Sarah saw him there behind the tree.

For now, he'll keep on pretending that their relationship is just a cover, platonic and distant and professional.

Chuck will hold on to the hope that Sarah's fierce dedication is a sign of something more, but he'll never make the first move.

That, and he's still a little afraid to make a move on a girl who can use a gun like that.

End.
