Storm Hawks—You Raise Me Up

By WhispertheWolf

Aerrow smiled as he looked upon a picture of him and his team. It was taken at the Sky Knight Trials after Aerrow had been knighted. Everyone was celebrating. It was the start of something new, something great. But for Aerrow, it was more than that. It was the end of a time of loneliness and pain.

They didn't know it. He'd never shown them. But at times, Aerrow had lost faith. He'd been abandoned in a time with no hope. He'd been through more than he could ever hope upon anyone else. The death of his family had only been the beginning. He was beaten as a young child in the orphanage. Once he ran away, he was neglected, ignored, and forsaken.

Then he met the others. Now, whenever he was unsettled, he would just have to wait until one of his friends was ready to talk. He never did open himself up to them, but talking with them even about unimportant things helped.

When I am down and, oh, my soul, so weary,

When troubles come and my heart burdened be,

Then I am still and wait here in the silence,

Until you come and sit awhile with me.

The first of the group he met was Radarr, the first someone to ever really care about him. He found the little guy as a pup. Radarr hadn't even been old enough to take care of himself. He depended on Aerrow. For once in his life, Aerrow was needed.

Then Aerrow met Piper, an outsider among others. He invited her to see a world she did not know, where freedom was what it was all about. After all, freedom was the thing that kept Aerrow's life blissful.

The next was Finn, who later introduced him Junko. Finally he had some guy friends who accepted him. Stork came with the Condor when they found it.

When he asked all of them to be his squadron, they immediately fell into step behind him, letting him guide and protect them. For them, Aerrow had to be strong. And because of them, he could be stronger than he'd ever been before.

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains.

You raise me up to walk on stormy seas.

I am strong when I am on your shoulders.

You raise me up to more than I can be.

He always wanted to be a warrior, to go to battle and fight for glory, even after hearing all the horror stories about it. He had always wanted revenge on the one person who was the start of all his problems. Aerrow knew these were evil thoughts, but they were true.

There is no life, no life without its hunger.

Each restless heart beats so imperfectly.

Sometimes Aerrow gets to thinking this world is all about fighting and lives are always short.

But when you come and I am filled with wonder,

Sometimes I think I glimpse eternity.

His friends love him to no end. They could calm his imperfections. They help him see reason. Yet they see him as the tough one, sturdy and resilient. But that's because they help him to be.

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains.

You raise me up to walk on stormy seas.

I am strong when I am on your shoulders.

You raise me up to more than I can be.

Aerrow folded the picture up and put it back in his dresser drawer. He had work to do, chores to finish, and others waiting on him to fill them with confidence. And yet they had no idea that they did the same for him without saying a word. They were more than just his squadron or his friends.

They were his family. Because of them, he could do anything.

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains.

You raise me up to walk on stormy seas.

I am strong when I am on your shoulders.

You raise me up to more than I can be.

He could be strong because his family helped him to do more than his best.

You raise me up to more than I can be.
