The Day I Saw My Daddy Cry By Madeline Elise Carter
I saw my Daddy cry today. Mommy didn't wake me up when she was supposed to. I got out of bed and looked at my smiley face clock and saw it was 9:30am. I ran downstairs shouting "Why didn't you wake me up?" I know I'm only six, but I know when something is wrong. Today, there was something wrong.
Daddy was staring at the TV with his mouth open and a scary look on his face. Mommy came up to me and whispered "You're not going to go to school today darling." Mommy NEVER calls me darling. She calls me sweetie or "Madeline Elise Carter, you come here." Daddy calls me Pumpkin. Mommy went up to Daddy and put her arms around him. Daddy reached up and held Mommy's arms. I crawled up into Daddy's lap and he gave me a big hug. I looked at the TV and saw the News. They showed a really tall building and a plane crashing into it. I know I'm only six, but I know planes aren't supposed to crash into buildings. Then all of a sudden it showed the building fall. But it didn't fall over. Daddy and Mommy gasped at the same time. Everyone says they think alike. It's true. I asked where this was, Mommy said New York. What's the big deal? We don't live in New York. But I didn't say anything. Then I remembered, Nana lived in New York. And so did Gamma. No wonder Mommy and Daddy was scared.
Now I was getting scared. I love Nana and Gamma A LOT. I left the room and got myself dressed and ready. I went back downstairs and Mommy told me to put my sweater on. I started to whine, but Mommy had this look on her face and I bit my tongue. Mommy waddled over to Daddy and said we were leaving now. Daddy gave Mommy a big kiss. They said something to each other, I know because I could see their lips move. But I couldn't hear anything. Mommy is very pregnant. She says she due any day now. I can't wait to have a baby brother or sister. Mommy told Daddy and me at the same time and when she told us, Daddy let out a big whoop. Mommy said he did the same thing when she told him she was going to have me.
Daddy came over to me and gave me big bear hug. He gave me a kiss and played with my curls. I asked where we were going but they didn't answer. Daddy went back into the family room and sat down. Mommy got her keys and said, "Come on Kiddo." I slowly walked over to Mommy but not before I saw tears on my Daddy's face. It made me want to cry.
