Chapter 1: The Phone Call
In the middle of a wealthy neighborhood, the Hayakaze household stood in silence.
"Mom? Hey, you home?" A girl descended down the stairs, trying to break the house's silence. "Hello? Anybody home…?" Realizing that she was just answered with more silence, she sighs and walks in the dining room, where a tall, tuxedoed man greets her by the doorway. "Good morning, miss Fuyuna!"
The girl, now known as Fuyuna, returns the smile and greets, "Good morning, Mitch!" The man bows slightly, as if to return the greeting and ushers her to the dining table.
"Did you sleep well?", he asks, as he serves her the day's breakfast. Fuyuna shrugs, and replies, "Pretty well, thanks for asking!" Mitch smiles a little, as she asks, "Hey, would you know where mom is? I was calling for her this morning but she didn't answer."
Mitch seemed to think about it for a moment, and replied, "Ah! Miss Natsuna mentioned something about a business trip to London this morning." Fuyuna's face fell at this piece of news, while he continued on, "She apologizes that she wouldn't be able to make it to your special weekend out, along with her best regards."
Fuyuna scoffed, "Sure she does…" She started to eat, saying "If she truly was sorry, she wouldn't put so much of her attention on work all the time!" Mitch, although a bit sad at how the news affected her, shrugged and said, "She always has done all these things for you, young miss."
She pushes the plate away and responds, "If she really is doing this for me, would it be too much for her to put me first?" She heaves another sigh, and walks back upstairs to her bedroom.
(Meanwhile, in another side of town…)
This side of town is much less quieter than the neighborhood, and it seemed it would remain that way as a bellowed "WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE BROKE OUT?" rang out.
Officer Shinobu Kuzuruna is one of the bravest and the loudest officers in the history on the force, widely known for his hot temper. Today, however, his anger came as a surprise to everyone as he yelled at a poor, unsuspecting soul over the phone, obviously angered at what seemed like an ordinary breakout.
The policeman on the other line was visibly shocked, more surprised that he was at the receiving end of the officer's lengthy and loud litanies over the phone. "H- He broke out last night, O- O- Officer Sh- Shinobu…," he managed to stammer, "W- we t-t- tried to-"
"YOU TRIED? IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE YOU TRIED HARD ENOUGH, BOY! WHY THE HELL-" The officer was cut off when a hand took the phone from him and said, "Thank you for your thorough report, Officer. You may be dismissed." A soft click signified the end of the call, the person on the other end seemed too shocked to thank Kudou properly.
"WHAT THE HELL, KUDOU?" Shinobu yelled, obviously annoyed. Kudou, however, remained calm and replied, "Listen, I know you're worried about Natsuna-chan's daughter-"
"WORRIED?" Kudou merely raised an eyebrow, unfazed by the officer's yelling. The latter took this as a sign, and struggled to keep his voice down as he gritted out, "Her maniac father just broke out of prison! Give me a damn good reason why I shouldn't worry, Kudou." He practically growls the last half of the sentence.
"I know you're worried, but do you really think yelling at some unsuspecting soul is gonna bring him back to jail?" Kudou replied as calmly as before. "The maniac is out there already, Officer. The least we can do now is save Fuyuna while we can until your team can nab him."
"You say that as if it's so easy to just grab Fuyuna and take her to a safe house." Officer Shinobu retorts, "Am I to assume you've somehow figured everything out now? Am I to assume you've got a plan all laid out too?"
"Matter of fact, I do." Kudou said pointedly, noting the sarcastic hint in the officer's words. "Not only have I figured out where she can lay low while you look for her father, I've also picked out her companion in the event that her butler isn't around."
Obviously taken aback by his preparation, he gestured for Kudou to keep going. "There's a safe house right at the outskirts of town. Considering her situation, it's better if less people knew her whereabouts so I made sure I picked a house that only a few people on the force are aware of."
He seemed pleased with Kudou's plan, and asked further, "And her… companion?"
At this, Kudou offered a small smile as he elaborated, "He's perfect. He and Fuyuna seem pretty close and he can take care of himself."
Right then, a spiky-haired, platinum blond teen entered the room. "Officer Shinobu, this is Gouenji Shuuya."
(Back at the Hayakaze household…)
A few moments later, the phone downstairs rings. Its frenetic ringing echoed through the empty halls, and would have remained ignored if not for the fact that it persisted longer than a few minutes.
Fuyuna, too, noticed this and called out, "Mitch? Phone's ringing!" Noting the odd lack of response from the butler, she pushed herself off the bed, and peeked out her doorway. "Mitch? Everything okay down there?"
More silence answered for him. By now, Fuyuna was scared and mildly annoyed that her questions remain unanswered. "This better not be a joke, okay?" she calls out, and runs down the stairs and into the kitchen, where she was met with an empty room.
"What is going on today?" she asked. All vestiges of annoyance left her, however, when she saw that the door to his bedroom was slightly open. Hesitantly, she reached out and opened the door a little wider… until she saw a splotch of blood.
Her face paled, her heartbeat quickened as she shakily backed away from the door. After taking a few deep breaths to steady herself, she mustered enough courage to open the door further when the phone rang again.
She took another deep breath, as she lifted the phone from its receiver and answered, "Hello? T-this is Fuyunamu Hayakaze speaking." Rapid, excited breathing was all she heard from the other end, until an eerily familiar voice replied, "Well hello there, my dearest."
She gasped, and decided to remain silent. She didn't want to let the person on the other side of the line to know that she was panicking. The person on the other line, however, was determined to make her talk.
"Come on, my dearest, don't you wanna talk to Daddy?"
"What do you want?" Fuyuna said shakily. Her hand gripped the phone hard, as she iterated her question, "What the hell do you want?"
Her father sighed, and said, "Am I not allowed to have small conversations with my dearest daughter here and there?"
"You lost all the rights to make small conversation with me a long time ago." Fuyuna struggled to keep her voice steady, tears flowing down her face.
"Why not, dearest one-"
"SHUT UP!" Fuyuna burst, weeping on the phone. "Stop calling me 'dearest one' and leave me alone!" She slammed the phone, struggling to stop shaking.
"Why'd you put the phone down, dearest one?"
GREETINGS FRIENDS I'M BACK FROM THE DEAD!
I reread this the other day and I saw a lot of flaws in the initial plot, so now I'm tweaking it a little! (a lot actually) Aside from fixing this fic, I might change the title and the summary altogether because I realize that they didn't really match what the fic has become.
Anyways, hope you enjoy this update of sorts! 'Till the next chapter!
