The dark had always been a comfort; a place where she could be herself. This dark was different, it was cold and seemed to strike to the very core. Her book sat on the coffee table, she couldn't remember when she had abandoned it there. Her coffee cup sat on the window ledge half full. The Kathryn Janeway she knew was being reexamined in this "void" and the coffee wasn't needed to keep her awake.

There was a beep at the door.

Chakotay. She thought. Bring on the lecture.

"Come in," she said softly.

He entered concern plastered on his normally handsome face.

Oh god, she thought. He's concerned. Here we go.

"What can I do for you, Commander?"

He stepped closer and she resisted the urge to flee. He took another step and she repeated,

"What can I do for you, Commander?"

He wrapped his arms around her gently and held her. Suddenly it all came loose, tears fell and she silently sobbed into his strong chest.

When she had pulled herself together she looked up into his soft eyes.

"How did you know?"

"We're all feeling it Kathryn. You've been locked in your quarters for nearly a week. Even a Captain needs a confidant, a friend."

"Just a friend?" she questioned.

He frowned.

"I will always be at your side."

She needed him, now more than ever, she wanted to tell him, she needed to tell him.

"Chakotay I…" she trailed off not sure how to approach it.

"Shh," he said, lifted her chin with his finger, and softly kissed her.

"Well then," she said when they managed to break apart. "It seems the Captain needed more than a friend."

"May I stay? Or am I going to be an interruption to your self evaluation?"

"I could use a good distraction," she said with a sly smile. "Are you a good distraction?"
