I was raised around animals. I've always been around them, and I understand them now. I know how they work and how they move.
Ax says that's probably why I'm able to morph the way I am.
It's hard, though, to see this now. It's hard to know so much that I can't look at an animal without scanning it for useful traits, anything we could use against the Yeerks. All they are in my mind now is weapons. Weapons in a war for human freedom. It isn't fair. I used to love them.
What happened?
I used to have a pretty good idea about my future-you know, I just wanted to be a veterinarian. And I was going to be, too. I had tons of practice, for starters, but the real reason I was set apart from the rest was that I loved the animals I worked with. I treated every one of them differently, according to their personality.
But when you've BEEN that rat, and all you can think about is how much it wanted to eat that... nevermind. The point is, everything's changed. I've changed. Jake's changed. Rachel, Marco, Tobias-don't even start me on Tobias.
We've all changed, and I don't know if we'll ever be able to live normal lives after this, when the war is over. If we have lives when the war is over.
