Prologue: The Dark that Surrounds Me

Tessa gray had lived at the Wolf Hut for two years now. Her brother had gone missing and her aunt was dead. Liem, the pack leader, had taken care of her and had been the father she never had. He took her up off the streets after she had escaped from the dark sisters.

The dark sisters had unlocked her power and were planning on giving her to someone named the magister. He planned to use her like Liem said many would. Her power was a secret among the pack, and nobody knew about it, and she planned to keep it that way.

That is why she was focusing on her training as a werewolf and other sorts of dangerous animals. This was her power. She was a shape shifter who could change into downworlders, animals, shadowhunters, and mundanes. Not only could she change into them, she could read there thoughts.

That's why she changed stood in the center of the training room on her knees and out of breath. She was training with Liem and had just changed into a lion. She was progressing.

"You did well," said Liem. He walked over to her with a cup of water. Tessa took the glass from him and gulped in the cool water.

"Thanks," I replied. Then I lifted myself to my feet. Right now my focus was shifting and then I would learn how to fight.

"You are finished for the day, dawta," he said. Liem always called Tessa dawta which means daughter in Jamaica. Liem had moved here from Jamaica. She nodded and then left the training room and went to shower. She walked across the grand lobby to the elevators.

The Wolf Hut was a nice hotel, but anyone but our pack passed it on the streets, even the people of the shadow world. A warlock made it for the pack ten years ago as a gift. You had to be a loyal member the pack to step foot inside.

Tessa stepped inside the elevator and waited as it went up. When it reached fifth floor she walked down the hallway to room 1034 and went inside. The room was nice with plush white carpets, a king sized bed with satin sheets and pillows, and a huge window that gave a great view of New York. It also had a bathroom with a grand tub and a shower and a sink.

Tessa turned on the shower and stripped down my dirty training clothes and hopped into the shower.

Three hours later

That night Tessa was sitting in the lobby reading when she heard a banging outside. She got up and walked to the doors and stuck her head outside. She didn't see anything and stepped fully outside to look around. Then she saw a black shadow and something lunge. All Tessa had time to do was let out a scream and she was down.
