Day 794
With Madison, Nick, Alicia, Luciana, Strand, and Daniel
Madison and her company walked along the very stretchy road leading from El Paso all the way to Austin. It had been two years since Nick had blown up the Gonzalez Dam and who knows what happened to those Proctor guys. It didn't matter because Madison, Nick, Alicia, Luciana, Strand and Daniel were alive. And in Alicia's hands was her son, who was only 15 months old. Alicia named him Jackal, his father Jake would've loved that name. Madison stops her group in her tracks as she spots something in the distance.
Madison: Hold up, we got something.
Nick: What you see Mom?
Madison walks closer and sees that it's a hospital in the distance.
Madison: I think we just found a hospital. (She motions for them to walk forward) Be on the lookout for other survivors.
Alicia: And infected.
Madison: And infected...and living people.
Nick: If we find enough drugs in there, I could probably make some painkillers for us. I could make Oxy.
Madison: We'll keep that in mind Nick.
With Morgan Jones and Charlie
Charlie had been in the care of Morgan for a span of three days gone bye and Morgan made it clear to the girl that he was going to find a safe place for her and then he would be on his way. The first place he went to look for supplies was the hospital called St. David's North Austin Medical Center.
Morgan: Over there, you see that hospital? We're going to look for supplies in there.
Charlie: What if the dead are inside?
Morgan: If there are any walkers inside, we'll try and clear them out. I need you to stay behind me at all times; I'm not losing another child.
Charlie: You lost a child before? I'm so sorry.
Morgan: Doesn't matter anymore, just do what I say, you understand?
With John Dorie and June
John Dorie (I-E, no Y) and June have been living together for a long time (a year) and when June told John that she was a nurse, he knew that every nurse needed medical equipment, so he found the nearest hospital in the vicinity.
John: So what are we looking for specifically?
June: Nothing much. Just a defibrillator, some IV bags, antibiotics, a syringe pump...anything that a nurse would use in an infirmary.
John: You think this should be an easy fine? (He pulls out a candy and offers it to her) Have one, it's quite tasty.
June: (She accepts it and smiles at him) Thanks, John.
With Althea
Althea: (To herself) Well, looks like we're here. The hospital whatever the name is. (She parks her SWAT vehicle in a parking lot and removes the keys from the ignition) Time to get going. (She places her camera and tapes inside a secret compartment and locks it tightly) Time to get some fuel.
Althea had loads of ramen noodles in her truck, but she was not here for food, she was here because her truck was running low on diesel. Cars still had gas in them, but her truck required diesel and finding diesel nowadays was pretty hard. But nobody looks for diesel because most cars are dead and big trucks are practically nonexistent. The hospital always carries diesel with them so that was her goal. Any additional food and medicine that she finds is a bonus.
Morgan twirled the staff in his hands and kept Charlie close behind him. He saw a small group of infected at the door and he counted at least four. He taps his staff against the wall and gets their attention. When the infected get close enough, he kills all four of them with his staff.
Charlie: Are you some kind of karate man?
Morgan: (Chuckling) Not karate.
Charlie: If it's not karate, then what is it?
Morgan:...Just not karate, but a unique skill of fighting.
Charlie: Aikido?
Morgan: Lucky guess.
Morgan approaches the doors splattered with blood and opens them carefully. The hospital was completely out of power, but luckily for them, it was still daytime and Morgan still has a flashlight on him.
Morgan: Remember to stay close behind me.
As Althea approached the hospital, she noticed two makeshift gravestones beside this tree and the shovel was still there. Lacking any available melee weapons, she grabs the shovel and grins to herself.
Althea: We can put a dent in a person's head with this baby.
Madison and her group approach and open window and they crawl through one at a time. Madison draws her pistol as Luciana draws her shotgun.
Madison: Lucy, you will follow me.
Strand: Madison, are you sure it's a good idea to split up?
Daniel: What's the matter Strand, afraid of going off on your own?
Strand: (Glares at Daniel with suspicion. Glares at the hole in his cheek that he's had for two years) Not that, it's just that the infected worry me.
Luciana: Guys, just make a choice and get a move on.
Nick: I'll go with Strand. Alicia, you can go with Daniel.
Alicia: I really don't want to find any trouble, especially with Jackal in my hands.
Madison and Lucy go one way, Nick and Strand go another way while Alicia and Daniel go another.
Alicia: Daniel, how long have we've known each other?
Daniel: Dos años (Two years). What is it that you do not see?
Alicia: I know how you feel about Strand. He has never been too fond of you, but you have to learn to trust him.
Daniel: He shot me in the mouth and left me to die. You get shot in the cheek and then we'll come talk.
Alicia: Don't talk too loudly or else we'll attract the dead.
John and June stop in their tracks after hearing the voice come from the pediatric ward. John smiles and walks towards the voice, but June stops him. Just before they could stop, Alicia and Daniel walk out of the room and into the hallway and spot John and June. They draw their guns on them, but John offers a friendly smile to them, especially after noticing Jackal in Alicia's arms.
John: Hi there, my name's John. John Dorie, like the fish. But not Y, but I-E. (He holsters his gun and pulls out a candy and offers it to them) We don't have to start this off on the wrong foot. Have a candy, they're pretty tasty.
Alicia steps forward and takes the candy and gulps it down.
John: You want another?
Daniel: (Cocks his gun) Who are you two?
John: Well I'm John and this is June. She's an ICU nurse and we came here so she can get the stuff an ICU nurse needs. What're your names?
Alicia no longer registered them as a threat, but Daniel did not lower his gun.
Alicia: I'm Alicia and this is Daniel. This little guy here is Jackal. We came here for supplies as well.
John: Well maybe we can help each other out.
June: John, we can't trust these people.
John: They have a little guy with them; they might need help.
Madison and Luciana sneak up on John and June. The two notice and introduce themselves.
Alicia: It's okay Mom, they're no threat. John, June, this is my mother Madison and she is Luciana.
Madison: (Lowering her gun) Hello.
Morgan and Charlie walk up a flight of stairs with Morgan killing numerously infected along the way. One he pushed down the stairs and its head snapped right off its body. Morgan walked towards the slightly ajar doors leading to the outside and opened it. Morgan kept his staff ready to strike as he felt something creeping up on him. He looks down the hall to his right and sees a body before he looks to his left.
A shovel slapped him against the head. Morgan fell flat on his back with a bleeding nose. Charlie looked stunned before looking at the assailant. It was Althea.
Althea: You better back away from us kid or you're next.
Charlie got the message and backed away.
Althea blinked numerous times and slapped herself on the forehead with her hand. She began muttering to herself and scolding herself for what she has done.
Althea: Look what you did, you killed a man!
Dark Althea: No, you did that. You were the one on the steering wheel this time.
Althea: You're lying, you know that it was you. How could you hit that man?
Dark Althea: It wasn't me, it was you.
Althea: Shut up!
Dark Althea: Only I tell you to shut up.
Althea: You are just a voice inside my head and I will lock you away in the darkest corner.
Althea struggled a few more times before finally Dark Althea took over and looked at Charlie with a sadistic grin on her face. Charlie backed away as Dark Althea raised the shovel again to strike Charlie. She ducked out the way in time and crawled underneath a table and to the other side. Dark Althea leaped over and swung the shovel at her. Charlie slid between Dark Althea's legs and barely dodged the shovel.
Dark Althea: Don't worry, it will just be a little prick little girl.
Charlie grabbed a fallen notebook and threw it at Dark Althea's face. The outcome of that was that Dark Althea was now Darker Althea. Charlie crawled as quickly as she could and climbed to her feet, but it was too late. The Darker Althea managed to swing the shovel like a baseball bat and hit her target this time. Charlie fell to the ground with a bleeding lip.
The Darker Althea stomped on the girl's back, pinning her down and raised the shovel and prepared to kill her once and for all (You all probably dislike Charlie for what she did to Nick and you are probably happy to see her get beaten up). Just as the tip of the shovel was three feet from Charlie's neck, the Darker Althea hammers it down, only to stop when she saw Charlie's terrified face.
Althea's eyes widened with horror as she realized that she was about to kill an innocent ten-year-old. Her compassion managed to overcome her darker self or reflection.
Charlie: Please don't kill me.
Althea choked on a sob as she saw the blood drip from her mouth.
Althea: We are so sorry. (A single tear rolled down her cheek)
Nick and Strand ran up the flight of stairs and into a hallway to find Morgan lying on the ground, wounded and a wounded child on the ground with a crying woman sitting against the counter with a shovel beside her. Strand tends to Morgan while Nick tends to Althea and Charlie.
Charlie: (Backing away from Nick) Please don't hurt me.
Nick: I'm not going to hurt you, I'm going to help you. My name's Nick, who's your mother?
Charlie: She's not my mother, just...some survivor we found here.
Strand applies pressure to Morgan's bleeding nose.
Strand: Breath through your mouth and just let your body heal itself. I'm Victor Strand by the way.
Morgan: Morgan Jones.
Strand: Well Morgan Jones, what are you doing here in this hospital?
Morgan: Came here to find supplies for Charlie. I'm taking her to a safe place. And no she's not my daughter.
Strand: (Looking at Charlie and then to Morgan) So she's not your daughter? How did you find her?
Morgan: Stumbled upon her myself at the border. Her parents were devoured right in front of her. I have to get her somewhere safe.
Strand: Whatever happened to you anyway?
Morgan: A wild case of deja vu is what happened. (Chuckling) Yep, a very wild case of deja vu.
Madison and June take supplies from ICU while John bonds with Alicia and Luciana.
John: Forgive me if I talk too much. I've had only one person to talk to before I met you guys today and I am so not used to meeting new people.
Luciana: We're not used to seeing new people either.
Alicia: You should see the other guy. If you try to pull any fast ones on us, you're going to wish you were dead.
John: If I was aware that a person was a mother or father, then I would never kill them; even if they shot at me. But I try not to kill at all because it's wrong.
With Madison and June.
Madison: So June, what were you before everything went to hell?
June: I used to be an ICU nurse, which is why I'm taking supplies from ICU. What about you?
Madison: High school guidance counselor. You from around here?
June: Born and raised. You?
Madison: Los Angeles, one of the first cities to go down once this infection started spreading. Possibly the first city to go down.
With John, Luciana, Alicia, and Daniel.
John: So I used to be a police officer before the outbreak, a job I really liked.
Alicia: I was still in high school. Received several acceptances into several colleges just a few days before the outbreak. I had such big plans and now those plans are going down the drown. Jackal was born after, but his father didn't make it.
John: I'm sorry for your loss, Alicia, if there is one thing I learned, when things are looking down, look up. Jackal here is the future of this world.
Daniel: (Shaking his head) Sometimes that doesn't always work. I used to be in the Sombra Negra, had a wife and daughter both this world took them from me.
John: I am so sorry for your losses. (Turns to Luciana) What's your story?
Luciana: Got nothing much to say. Used to live in Mexico and I was part of a community called La Colonia. A man I knew there claimed to be immune to the infected, but it all turned out to be lies.
John: Don't worry, we'll find a cure. We'll go back to the way things used to be. Do you want a candy?
A loud crash could be heard upstairs, alarming all of the survivors. The six of them pick up the pace and run upstairs. They knew that Nick and Strand were up there.
Nick had managed to patch up Charlies's bleeding lip and help Althea to her feet, but curiosity got the better of him when he saw a door at the end of the hallway with a rag that had the number 14 spray painted on. Instead of warning Strand, he takes a few steps towards the door and with eager hands and the adrenaline junkie within him taking him over, he opens the door and he is tackled by numerous infected. Strand, Charlie, Althea, and Morgan notice and go to help Nick. Only one infected was on Nick and snarling to get a bite out of him, but more infected were coming out of the room. Nick now had a pretty good idea as to what the 14 on the rag was supposed to mean.
Outside the hospital, three eighteen wheeler trucks had dozens of infected trapped inside. One truck was labeled 22, the second labeled 19, while the last one was labeled 33. This was the work of a passive-aggressive group known as the Vultures.
Mel ordered for his brother Ennis to attract the small herd of infected into the first truck of infected. Ennis was riding a bike with the song I'm A Believer playing on a radio attached to the rear of the bike. Ennis went in circles numerous times while counting how many infected there were. After concluding that there were eighteen infected chasing after him, he speeds up and parks his bike near the first eighteen wheeler and three other survivors open the back just as Ennis throws the radio inside. He hid from sight as the eighteen infected followed inside the truck. Ennis and the three survivors close the truck down as Mel sits down in a chair with a beer in his hand.
Mel: Little brother, good job, but you cost us a radio.
Ennis looked to see a Vulture removing the 22 rag and replacing it with another. This time, the truck was labeled as 40.
Ennis: The radio had only one song to play anyways.
The two brothers could still hear the song playing from inside the truck.
Mel: Did you clear everything out of the hospital?
Ennis: Yes and every dead person inside were locked up in two rooms. They were in the janitor's closet and the cafeteria. The closet has 14 deaders while the cafeteria has 72.
Mel: People are going to think twice before going into that hospital. We should get a move on while we're still ahead of the infected. (Whistles) Everyone in their trucks; we're blowing this joint.
Mel and Ennis climbed into the 40 truck while the remaining Vultures climbed into the other two trucks and the group drove off and away from the hospital. Just following the trucks was a large group of infected, roughly 453 infected to be exact. Although the Vultures were driving to get away from the hospital, they were still driving in the direction of the hospital and leading the entire herd there.
Nick shoves the infected off of him and stabs it with his knife. When the blade missed the brain, he dug two fingers deep into the infected eyeballs. The eyeballs made a squishing noise as Nick's thumbs went deep in. They went so deep that the thumbs pierced the brain and the infected died instantly.
Althea took this opportunity to kick the infected tried to bite her and kill it with her shovel. Although nobody but Nick noticed, Althea was smiling. The Dark Althea was starting to re-emerge. But the regular Althea was snapped out of it when an infected almost bit her on the shoulder. She pulled her body back in time and brought the shovel up to the infected teeth. She forced the infected into the nearby wall and smashed its head.
Morgan utilized his aikido skills to attack the infected and killed most of them. Madison and her company made it up the stairs at the very last second to find all 14 of the infected destroyed.
Madison helped her son up and Madison stared at the new people while Nick stared at the new people with Madison.
Nick: Mother, Alicia, Luciana, Daniel, I would like you to meet Morgan, Althea, and Charlie.
Madison: This is John and June. What the hell was the crashing sound?
Nick: That might have been me. This door has a 14 spray painted on it and I opened it and 14 infected came walking out.
Madison: But you're okay right? No one's bitten or scratched or anything?
Morgan: We're fine.
Charlie stood beside Morgan as she stared with intensity at Althea. She looked at the blood on her shovel and became even more fearful of her. If Morgan was going to get her to safety, then this would be the better place with all these people. She believed in safety in numbers.
Charlie: Can I go with you guys?
Madison: Your name Charlie?
Charlie: Yeah, can I go with you guys? Safety in numbers and all?
Madison: How old are you?
Charlie: 10.
Madison: You can come with us then.
Charlie: Thank you.
Althea: Wait! Before you guys go, we would like to make a small request to you guys. Can the several of you follow us to our van so we can give you guys something?
All ten survivors looked at her with bewilderment.
Madison: What do you want from us?
Althea: We are journalists. We want to interview all of you. We have a camera in our van.
Madison: What are you even doing in this hospital anyways?
Althea: We came to get fuel and since we got it, we want to do an interview of all of you guys.
Morgan: You hit me with a shovel!
Althea: That was not 'me'. We'll explain later. We know that there is hope and one day someone will want to know what happened. Until then, we think an interview will do for now.
Strand: You're a very strange woman Althea.
Darker Althea: You have no idea.
As Althea escorted the survivors downstairs with several backpacks with a few cans of diesel inside, she opened the doors to find a massive herd of infected outside the hospital. They were completely swarmed by the undead and it was not looking good. It looked like they were all going in one direction until Althea opening the door caught their attention and gave the infected a new reason to start growling.
Dark Althea: (Smiling sadistically) This should be fun.
Madison: Althea, where's your van?!
Dark Althea ignored her answer and started whacking numerously infected in the skull as they got closer to her. Her hearing went away and all she could hear was a ringing. This signaled that the Dark Althea has taken her over completely and she was killing the infected for fun and she wasn't going to stop until the Dark Althea had enough.
Morgan, still dizzy from her blow from earlier, teeters towards Althea and grabs her shoulder.
Morgan: Al, this is not worth your life.
Dark Althea shoves Morgan back and goes to kill more infected.
Morgan: Al, if you don't come with us, you won't be able to interview us.
This snapped the Dark Althea back into reality and Althea backed away from the herd of infected.
Nick swings his knife at an infected and pushes it back as he runs towards the only truck in the parking lot. Althea was dragged by Morgan towards the SWAT van and she climbed in through the back. She closes the back door behind her as Daniel and John climb in and locks it. Madison already beat her to the driver's seat and called out for the keys. Althea did the honors of tossing Madison the keys and she shoved them into the ignition and started up the vehicle.
Althea: The switch, pull it!
Daniel reaches for the lever near the wheel and yanks it. Windows from the left side of the van open and two M249 SAW machine guns fire at dozens of infected and tear them apart. Madison stomped on the gas pedal and drove off into the distance, Daniel easing off on the lever.
Madison: That's what you call improvising.
Madison looked at the street signs and made a turn on Eve Street.
Althea scooted towards the front and put her jaw on Madison's shoulder.
Althea: You guys still owe us a story because we saved all ten of you and the little rugrat. When we are ten miles outside the city, then we start talking and we won't stop until you have no more to give.
Madison: Can you remove your chin from my shoulder while I'm driving?
Althea: Sorry (She flashes a cheesy smile at Madison, her dark side emerging once more) had a lot of sugar today.
Madison: They say you are what you eat.
Althea: You're calling us 'sugar' sugar.
Madison: I'm sorry, but why do you keep saying 'we' and 'us' instead of 'me' and 'myself'?
Now Madison was beginning to feel uncomfortable being next to Althea.
Morgan: Hey Al, I would like an explanation. Why did you attack me and Charlie back at the hospital?
Althea: That was not 'me' me. That was my other half. I've been alone for so long, talking to myself that I actually have another voice inside my head and sometimes, she could take over. I'm not used to seeing new survivors, which is why she flipped out. I think our other half is jealous because she wants me all to herself and is willing to eliminate the competition. My darker self is never permanent, but always recurrent; especially with new people. We are two souls in one body.
John: (Stretching his arm out) Have a candy.
Ten hours later
A campfire was set up around the survivors as Althea got her camera setup and ready to interview each one of them. It was night, so she had to turn on her light and shine it on her interviewees. She shines the light on each of them to make sure that they were all paying attention.
Althea: Who would like to start first?
Madison: I'll go first.
Althea: What's your name?
Madison: Madison Clark.
Althea: Current age and occupation.
Madison: 42 and former high school guidance counselor. These children Nick and Alicia are my children. Jackal is my grandson, born after. We used to live in Los Angeles. We had a bigger family. We had a husband and a father named Stephen who died before the apocalypse, and we had an extended family.
Althea: Are any of these people besides Nick and Alicia and Jackal part of your family?
Madison: No, I met Daniel and his family a long time ago. Nick introduced me to Strand and we just me these new survivors.
Althea: By the way, is Jackal his real name?
Alicia: No, that's his nickname. His real name is Jaka.
Althea: We like the nickname "Jackal" it sounds awesome, cool and totally badass.
Alicia: It's just a nickname, Althea. I'm pretty sure that Jake would've like that nickname though.
Althea: Oh, Alicia and Jake combined make Jaka.
Madison: Jackal is the future.
Althea: It's been 26 months since the outbreak, how did you guys survive that long?
Madison: We traveled from place to place. From LA to Mexico, to El Paso and eventually to here. We lost a lot of people along the way and killed a lot of people along the way.
Dark Althea: Really, how many people? (She slaps herself awake) Sorry, my other self-taking over.
Daniel: I killed 96 people before this outbreak. I've now killed 118 people.
Althea shifted the camera towards Daniel and got a good shot of his face.
Daniel: I had a daughter who died before I could even see her again.
Althea shifted the camera towards Luciana and asked what her story was.
Luciana: I used to be part of a community called La Colonia located in Tijuana. The place is gone now. There was a man there who was bitten by the dead, but he survived.
Althea: Bullshit.
Nick: That's what I said, and it turns out he was bitten by an addict that he was trying to save. He actually died from a real bite from the dead.
Althea: Nick, since you know the man who leads La Colonia, did you meet Luciana there?
Nick: She saved me. I found a way to walk with the dead and she saved me.
Althea shifted focus towards John and June. She asked for their backstories and June revealed her nursing background and how she lost her child. John revealed that he was a police officer who shot a running man and he bled to death and turned.
She asked for Strand's backstory and she got details on how Strand basically saved Madison and her family along with Daniel's. Then she shifted her attention to Charlie and asked for her backstory. Charlie was barely eight years old when the outbreak hit and in elementary school. Her parents were torn to shreds when crossing the border into Texas. That's when she was found and saved by Morgan.
After interviewing Daniel, she got to the grand finale and interviewed Morgan Jones.
Althea: Tell the camera your name.
Morgan: My name's Morgan Jones. I'm 47 and I used to have a wife and son, both of whom are currently dead. I'm not from Texas, but from Georgia and then Virginia. I knew this man named Rick Grimes, he leads a community known as Alexandria. These were good communities. Good settlements. There wasn't just Alexandria, there was another one called the Hilltop Colony, Oceanside, and there was actually a place called the Kingdom, which had an actual king...and a tiger.
Alicia: For reals?
Morgan: I shit you not.
The survivors chuckled from this before Morgan continued on with his story.
Morgan: You may think it's all sunshine and rainbows, but it's not. We...there was this big group. A massive group with 500 hundred survivors give or take. They called themselves the Saviors. They would terrorize these communities in exchange for food and supplies. They were lead by a man named Negan. It was an all-out war between the communities and the Saviors. Countless lives died and communities were destroyed.
Althea: What happened to Rick? What happened to Negan?
Morgan: In the end...Rick he…(he rubs his nose) he had Negan at his mercy and he slit his throat. Rick cut his throat and he spared him from death.
Althea: Why?
Morgan: Rick said that there had to be something after all that has happened. There can't just be killing and killing. There can't be just surviving, there has to be living.
Althea: This happened in Virginia and you are here in Texas...why?
Morgan: I lost myself. I lost myself. I lost people before I lost myself. I couldn't be around those people. Rick told me that I was part of the new world, but I didn't believe him. I chose not to believe him. I refused to believe him. He told me that I would end up with one people one way or another and I ran halfway across the country just to prove him wrong. No matter how hard I tried to isolate myself, I somehow managed to find myself with people.
John: Morgan, we're never on our own in this world. Stop running from people.
Morgan: It's not that simple.
Althea: If we ever come across Rick Grimes, what should we say to him? Should we tell him about you?
Morgan: Al, if you ever come across Rick, tell him that I am not the person who he thought I was. I'm not that man anymore and I don't think I can ever go back. My job was to find Charlie a place for her to live and I found it. As soon as daylight hits, I will be on my way.
Daniel glared at Morgan.
Althea: What about you people? Are you going to leave us?
Madison: We'll figure something out.
Althea: I don't want to be alone again. We don't want to be alone again.
Nick pulls out the walkman he obtained in El Paso and pressed the play button. The song Love, Love, Love played.
Althea exhales deeply and removes the tape from her camera and writes 'Morgan' on it. Althea put her camera away and went into her SWAT van to gather a box of Cup-O-Noodles and counted them before she began cooking the noodles. The others wait patiently for the noodles to finish before Althea begins passing out Cup-O-Noodles to the gang.
Madison looked at the five survivors from her right before looking to the five survivors to her left before taking a spoonful of noodles.
Madison: Everything is going to get better. (Whispering to herself) There has to be something more than just surviving. Thank you, Morgan.
