AN: Spoilers for Comrades in Arms and Goodbye, Farewell, Amen.

Nothing But Everything

Hawkeye watched as BJ happily threw a pair of shorts and some socks into his trunk and began rummaging under his army issue cot in search of the belongings that had somehow spread across the entire tent in the time he'd been at the MASH 4077th.

"Beej, could I ask you something?" Hawkeye asked nervously turning a pair of socks over in his hands.

"Sure" BJ Hunnicut poured himself a martini not sorry that he would soon be free of the toxic stuff.

"Do you remember that trip I took with Margaret." Hawkeye paused, glancing at BJ to see if he remembered "To the 8063rd. They bugged out we got stranded"

"Ooh" BJ smiled "The time you took 'comfort' in each other" he said raising his eyebrows.

"Yeah. I think I was wrong. I really feel something. I can't stop thinking about her" Hawkeye said pacing through the cluttered tent. "After we leave here I'm never going to see her again. I don't know if I'm okay with that. Beej, what am I going to do?" he ended dejectedly collapsing on his cot.

"Go talk to her Halk, tell her"

"Yeah okay" he decided pulling himself from his bed.

"What have you got to lose?" BJ asked cheerfully turning back to his packing.

"Nothing but everything" he replied ducking his head through the door and heading across the compound.

"Margaret?" he said in a singsong voice knocking on the door.

"What" she barked, he took it as the okay to enter

"I just wanted to talk" her face softened a little

"Talk" she said turning away in the small tent, her voice masking the softening of her heart.

Hawkeye pressed his palm her cheek turning her face to him "I think I was wrong before. Maybe we're not too different" his voice was barely above a whisper. Outside she could hear celebrations, there'd been a lot of that in the last few days, though she hadn't really felt like celebrating. Her father and the people at the 4077th were all she had and she was losing them. For a moment she stared confused until she recalled a similar conversation with him over a year earlier.

"Excuse me?" she asked defensively brushing his hand from her cheek.

"Margaret, the day after tomorrow we're going our separate ways. I don't want to do that"

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying I care about you"

"Y-y-yyou" she stammered

"M-m-me, yes" Margaret Houlihan smiled genuinely for the first time since her divorce. Hawkeye decided it was safe to approach her again, resting his hand on her t-shirt covered shoulder.

"You are beautiful, you know" he told her, his eyes wandering over her eyes and face, but for once not straying lower "Remember that" he whispered "I'm not gonna tell you all the time" she smiled, she didn't need to hear it all the time.

"You're okay too. Just the way you are" she smiled, he acknowledged the unspoken promise.

When he finally pressed his lips to hers it was sweet, slow and explorative. She much preferred it to the spontaneous teasing kisses of the past. Though, she reasoned they weren't half bad either, better than Frank had ever been when she thought about it. When they pulled apart neither pulled away.

"You know, Margaret, we've changed so much."

"What do you mean" she asked curious

"Six months ago I never would have been able to come to you. You want commitment and I wouldn't have been able to give it to you, but I know nothing I could ever go through with you would be as hard at this. And six months ago if I had come in here and told you I felt something for you, you would've chucked me out wouldn't you?" She nodded.

"I'm glad it's now and not then"

"Me too"
