As snowflakes dappled my hair and face, I turned around to gaze at the wall of trees surrounding me and my meadow. Between the trees I could not only see trees and bushes, but could now discover the unseen marks and scratches in their surfaces. What I had lacked in sight a few weeks ago, I now gained in extreme senses and instinct. It's been only one month since I was turned, and I could already use my powers to their full extent. Layered beneath the smell of broken foliage and cold, hard ground was the faint hint of the boy I loved; Zane. He was upwind; I still had half a chance.

Nearly half a second later, I was hidden among the trees, standing upright against an old, peeling oak. Without a sneaksuit to cover my flash tattoos and infrared body, I would be easily seen, but the cold tree would cover me just as well. I waited until I could feel his steps and hear the silent crunch of snow underfoot.

Not daring to breathe, I turned around to face him. Behind the tree, I was invisible to his eyes, but he was not invisible to me. Turned around, I could see Zane's ink dyed hair blowing in the white fluffs that swirled around him. Slowly, he turned in a full circle, searching for his captor. As his back turned away from me, I made a quick dash up the scraggly old tree, barely struggling, never making a sound.

My approach started exactly how I planned it. Quickly, I jumped to the nearest branch, holding on like a cat on a tight rope. Slowly descending towards the end of the thick branch, a sly smile crept onto my face. As much as my inside was trying to burst out loud, I was afraid that the chuckle caught in my throat would erupt, destroying my plan entirely. Zane was still searching for the one who watched him, unaware of the fact that I was still creeping slowly towards him on the branch that jutted out just meters from him.

Suddenly, he crouched down, examining the snow. He hadn't noticed the tracks that indented the snow near the perimeter of the meadow, maybe he would skip over them, having just turned special a week ago. The next thing that happened, though, I had not anticipated.

As I jumped through the air, planning to land square on Zane's back, he ducked down at the last second. As I soared over his head and landed on my back with a grunt, Zane leaped at me, pinning me to the ground. It had all happened within 2 seconds, an ideal time, for a Special.

"Tally, you're going to have to try a little harder than that." Zane said with a smile.

"Oh, well, you know me. I'll always try harder next time." I closed my eyes and laid my head down in the fresh snow, showing my razor sharp teeth in an open smile. When I opened my eyes, Zane's face was right in front of me, the clearness of his every feature overwhelming me. One of Zane's hands came up and pulled my face closer to his, our lips meeting in a gentle kiss. When our lips parted, the smile still played on my face, Zane omitted an airy laugh. Our kiss tingled on my lips, making me as icy as I always am after a kiss from Zane.

For now, our love was all I needed to make it through the day. We were together now, after months of being apart. Maddy's pill had made Zane handicapped; shakes engulfing his body, making a ride on a simple hoverboard a challenge. But right now, Zane was special, and we would make the most of our time together, leaving nothing to come in between us and the world. Zane was safe and that was all that mattered to me.
