Learning to Fly

OMG Pastor Jim's dead! –sobs uncontrollably-

Songfic based on the song Learning to Fly by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

I'm learning to fly,

But I aint got wings,

Coming down,

Is the hardest thing,

I'm learning to fly,

Around the clouds,

But what goes up,

Must come down,

Sam shed no tears at his father's funeral and many at his brother's. After defeating the demon both of them had so severe injuries that they couldn't carry on. Sam still remembered holding onto his brother's hand as he supported Dean's head with the other. His brother after almost 23 years had finally told him that he loved him more than anything else in the world. That was when he coughed up a huge amount of blood and died peacefully in the care of his younger brother.

His father on the other hand, died on his own. Prior to the demon attacking them he had told Sam he was disappointed in him as a son. One of the worst things you can do as a parent.Somehow Dean rectified the problem by saying that he thought Sam was one of the bravest people he knew, even more so than his father. His brother was the only thing that enabled Sam to live his life. Now he was gone Sam felt confused and so very alone.

The youngest Winchester now found himself questioning the ways of life. he sat at his family's graves. They all stood in a line, his mother, father and brother. Someone called out his name and he quickly stood up and whirled around. Dean stood there, slightly transparent. "why the hell are you crying Sammy? I always knew you were a sook but this is too much for one man!"

Sam laughed quietly and choked on a sob, "you've always been a cold hearted bitch Dean. I'm crying because I've got no one left now. you're gone, mum's gone, even dad's gone" Dean laughed and shook his head, "we're not gone!" he poked Sam in the chest, "I'm in here as well as mum and dad. We've always been in there. Don't think you're getting rid of us that quickly!"

Dean drew his finger away and a thin gold thread followed it. he smiled softly and wrapped the strand around his finger a few times, "we've always been connected to you through here. Seek and you shall find. Whenever you don't feel like being with the living anymore just call on me and I'll help you through it. there's not much to do up there anyhow" he pointed towards the clouds.

Dean broke the thread and it quickly disappeared. "remember Sammy, you'll always be my favourite brother!" he stepped backwards and Sam thought for a second, "Dean, I'm your only brother" Dean smiled crookedly, "exactly my point Jerk. See you in the afterlife"

Sam looked back at the grave, then turned to his brother. Dean was gone. "I'm going mad" he muttered to himself and picked up his bags. He was going back to Stanford again. Dean's death had affected him in many ways, but Sam knew that he would have wanted Sam to finish his college education.

Piling the suitcases and duffle bags into the trunk of the newly rebuilt Impala Sam said a little prayer to himself. After all he was learning to fly, and coming down was the hardest thing.
