PART ONE

He would take the long way home, Haru decided. It'd been weeks since he'd seen her. The last time they'd talked, when Rin was in the hospital, it didn't end well.

I don't need you anymore.

Just like that. She dumped him. But now that she was back in school, Haru was determined to give it another shot, even if it meant he was about to get rejected again.

The dismissal bell had just rung when he arrived in front of her school. He scanned the mass of students flooding out the doors, looking specifically for the only one with the impossibly long black hair and the cold demeanor that only made him want her more. And there she was. She was alone, as she preferred to be, but seeing her like that was still unsettling. She looked afraid this time.

She was coming closer, either unaware of his presence or choosing to ignore him, although every other girl on campus seemed to take their sweet time passing him in order to get a good long look at the irresistibly dangerous-looking boy with the white hair and the biker jewelry. Haru remained completely oblivious to this fact. Rin quickened her pace to get by him, but he couldn't stop himself from grabbing her gently by the shoulder and turning her around to face him, also unable to stop the smile that crossed his face when their eyes met.

"What are you doing here?" she snapped. "I told you I never wanted to see you again."

Her voice was cold as ice, but both of them felt the familiar spark between them that even Rin's sudden hatred of him couldn't cover up.

"I know," he said, giving her an odd sort of smile. "But I wanted to see you."

She shoved him angrily against the brick wall of the school. "You just don't know when to give up, do you?"

And as sudden as she'd come, she was leaving again, her raven hair trailing behind her.

"Rin!" he called.

"Go to hell, Haru."

That was the last thing he heard from her before she rounded a corner and vanished from his sight.
