A high pitched scream split the calm night surrounding the Rider household. Jack instantly leapt up from the couch and raced upstairs to the room of a certain teenage spy. Fearing the worst, she threw open the door to Alex's room and spotted him huddled in a corner. He was curled into a fetal position and rocking back and forth while muttering something under his breath. Worried, Jack inched closer.
"...spider...there's a spider...gonna eat me...."
Jack felt the tension leave her body, only to be replaced with irritation. With the volume of that shriek she'd been expecting a few assassins at the very least.
"...Jack...help...me..."
Jack sighed and headed towards the bathroom for some toilet paper. Honestly, what kind of self-respecting spy was terrified of spiders? He could face down notorious terrorist organizations, but one little arachnid reduced him to a quivering mess.
Returning to the room, Jack quickly spotted the spider on the ceiling over Alex's bed. It was a nasty one, big, black, and hairy. Even Jack was a little intimidated. Still, the spider needed to be disposed of, and seeing that Alex was still hyperventilating in the corner, it looked like she had to do it.
The spider was pretty high up, but she could reach it by standing on the bed. Unfortunately, her aim was a bit off, and when Jack struck at the spider she only managed a glancing blow. It was knocked off the ceiling and fell right onto the middle of Alex's bed, where it quickly disappeared into the depths of the crumpled covers. Uh oh.
Jack removed the blankets one by one, shaking each out carefully to make sure the spider wasn't on it. It was eventually discovered on the bottom sheet, where Jack quickly smushed it.
"Alex? It's safe now, I got it," Jack gently called.
Alex slowly unwound himself and shuffled over to Jack. He turned one teary eye towards the bed, and paled instantly.
"Spider guts," he managed to gasp out before falling to the floor in a dead faint. Jack just rolled her eyes. Some people.
