Something Worth Fighting For

Chapter 1: Hot On Their Trail
Selene's head and back hurt more than she would care to admit, but she was determined if not down right stubborn to continue the grueling pace that she had started. Now was not the time to give in to her injuries that had once again reminded her that, although she was immortal, she was not unbreakable. Her body longed to give in and succumb to the sleep she desperately needed but her mind was in overdrive. The events that just transpired only a brief few minutes ago were enough to make her feel lost, confused, and above all betrayed. Her thoughts were unfocused and hazy at best. No doubt she had a serious concussion. Viktor had not only broken her body but part of her trust and confidence as well. It wasn't like Selene to feel so unsure of herself.

As she tried to make sense of everything that had happened, Michael was following right behind her. He was just as much exhausted as her, but his body was already in the process of healing itself and he was beginning to feel better as they walked on. Silence reigned as the pair made there way through the back alleys of Budapest. Michael did not know where she was leading him but faithfully he had put his trust into her. To him maybe more. He didn't know how she felt about their 'situation' but he knew that he possibly had an infinite amount of time to that find out. He pushed his newfound thoughts and feelings aside and concentrated on making sure his legs were moving one over the other.

Selene stopped. Someone was on their trail, but they were following a safe distance ahead of them to have not been noticed this far. Of course Michael didn't even know what was going on before he smacked right into Selene from behind.

She cried out in pain, as sharp daggers riddled her back. She reached out to hold onto the brick wall of a building and collect whatever fragile demeanor she had left.

"God! Watch where you are going!" She was finally able to scream out.
Michael mentally kicked himself for not noticing that she was hurt.

"I'm sorry...are you ok?"

"I'm fine. Just...back off."

"I just hope you remember the last time you said that. I didn't bring my swimsuit with me." His desperate attempt at a joke fell flat, as she only glared at him. Probably fighting the urge to shoot me, he thought.

But she immediately turned around and silenced him with her finger.

"Somebody is following us. They are too far away for me to tell if it is a vampire or lycan. We need to leave now and find shelter, we are in no condition to fight anyone else."

Michael agreed with her reasoning. Through the haze of the streetlight he could see the toll the battle had taken on Selene. The bloody wound to her forehead was drying but still had a lingering effect on her. And from the fact that she had cried out as loudly as she did when he ran into her, her back and ribs were probably broken or bruised. He looked at her and saw that her eyes were glazed and her breathing was becoming a struggle, coming out in short gasps.

"There is an abandoned safehouse not far from here that we can go to. We need to hurry before whatever it is catches on and follows us."

All Michael could do was nod, as Selene set in a dead run toward the safehouse.
