It was late. Two a.m. according to the clock on the bedside table. The hallway light was on, spilling a small amount of light into the bedroom, through a crack in the door. It illuminated the wallpaper, a butterflies and flowers pattern in shades of pink, purple, and yellow, that matched the bedspread. A small figure was entangled in said bedspread, hands clutching at the blanket as if it were going to leave her if she let go. Her soft breathing was the only noise in the room.
Kairi stood in the doorway, eyes taking in the room and the girl on the bed. She watched the girl for a while before moving closer, bare feet making no sound on the plush grey carpet. She was staring at the girl's face. It was the exact same as her own. Big eyes, small nose, full lips. Even the rounded shape was the same. Kairi watched her fondly, as she dreamed away. So carefree.
She remembered when it happened, his destruction. When Sora had told her, she cried for days. No, weeks. Kairi had been devastated. How could he be gone, this man she had surrendered her pure heart to? She would never again get to hear his voice, or feel his arms around her. Never again would she get to run her fingers through his hair, or press her lips to his. He would never smile again or joke about her height. He wouldn't be there anymore because he had faded into nothing, like all Nobodies eventually do.
Her heart then broke with the realization, that he would never know her, this little girl of his. The child she carried at such a young age. He would be a stranger to this little princess they created from darkness and pure light. Never would he hold her in his arms, never hear her call to him, never watch her sleep like this. He was gone and he never even got to meet her, this little sleeping girl. She had been the only reason Kairi could find not to follow him into death, or destruction as it were. The only reason she was rooted here to the world of the living, was the little angel tangled up in her sheets.
And a perfect little angel she was. She possessed the kind nature, energy, and heart void of all darkness that her mother did. She was mischievous though, as all children must be, Kairi mused. She carried the same, spunky, demanding attitude of her father though, and she had his power. Of all things to be genetic, it had to be his blasted supernatural ability to set himself and everything around him alight. She had nearly burned the house down the other day.
The nearly twenty year old, reached forward to move a strand of flaming red hair from the little girl's face. It was long and thick, and always falling into the little one's big bright green eyes. They were the same as his, her hair and eyes. That thick hair, that matched his colour exactly. It was growing too fast. It needed a trim, or a hairpin. Forever falling into her eyes. Those big green eyes, that were again exactly like his. Kairi often found herself getting lost with thoughts of him every time she looked at the girl.
The four year old stirred, mumbling incoherently as she rearranged herself, hair dangling once more in front of her face. Kairi smiled, tears in her eyes, when she finally settled again. She leaned down to kiss her daughter's head, before leaving. As the door shut she whispered to the child.
"Sweet Dreams, my little Lexa.
…Axel.
