Mouthful of Mushroom
The mushroom was odd, but Link ate it anyways, popped the whole thing in his mouth and chewed before Navi could see. She'd already expounded at great lengths on the dangers of consuming Strange and Unusual Organisms in a Strange and Unusual Woods. And indeed, Navi's caution had seemed reasonable at the time. But hours of foraging for food proved fruitless because Navi snatched every nut, root, and berry from Link's considering hands and flung them into the trees, crying out, "Unsuitable! God forbid! No!" And with supper long past, Link's empty belly could hold out no longer.
He chewed the mushroom quickly, which was a great endeavor due to its size and meaty, juicy flesh, and Link tried to keep his mouth closed the whole time to hide his eating. Meanwhile, up ahead, Navi was prattling on. She declared that there was nothing edible in this forest, and they should trek back to Death Mountain and sample the rocks where they were proven by the Gorons to be, at the very least, non-lethal. Then Navi glanced back at the furtively munching Link, and she knew he was hiding something.
"Link!" She shrieked. "What on earth are you eating?"
His mouth full of mushroom, Link could not maneuver his tongue around the delicious meal to form the words. The mushroom was sumptuous. Its plush, firm flesh was a pleasure to sink his teeth into, and Link could taste layers of subtle flavors, all buttery, roasted, and wonderfully tangy, the meat so filling and satisfying with every bite...
and then he collapsed to the ground, instantly asleep. And it was then that Navi knew exactly what Link had eaten.
