Somewhere.

Somewhere, she knows, her mother is watching over her.

Somewhere, her family is mourning her.

Somewhere, an enemy falls, defeated because of her.

And there, in that place without a name, she knows someone is waiting for her. He must be smiling. The same smile he wore in life, now camouflaging the face of a dead man. Because his smile is not so brilliant that it can steal glory from the sun. It is not so furtive as to steal the night's hidden charm.

But it is the smile she loves best, a smile that is there. Existing for her, before she had ever known him. A smile that loved her mother and that loved the family.

It is a smile that could never compete with the sun or skies, because even if they had ruled long before, she had been captured the day she had first seen it. Because it was not as lasting as the sun, not as endless as the sky, stretching beyond years she will never see. It dims, and falters, and sometimes disappears altogether.

For that, she loves it. She knows that her life cannot last, and neither can his smile.

She knows that his hand will not be there, reaching towards hers in warm sunlight.

She knows that night will never come for them. She is only the sky in which the rainbow can make itself seen.

Somewhere, in a world not ruled by wars for power, they must be living, and musing about the clouds that absolve them of their past sins.

It is there, in that place she'll never see, that her words really have a meaning. That they are not just last-minute confessions made before they part ways.

Somewhere, she knows, they could have been happy.

And now, here in this place, a place nameless to her and to him, but not to those that continue to breathe, they sit in perpetual silence. No words to comfort, no whispered pleas or declarations, no wistful recollections.

Here, they sit and clutch each other's hand. Knowing it could never last forever. But here they sit, and know that death is their binding promise to never go away. A silent promise because words aren't needed, there were never enough words to express their sorrow and joy.

She doesn't look up to see if he's smiling still.

But he is. Always smiling for her, even in this nameless place.

A/N: This is my sorry filler for my other Gamma/Uni fic... I'm working on it, although progress is slow due to school and life. (And yet I got a burst of inspiration for this oneshot...) I think I know now that Gamma and Uni will forever own my affection xD I should write something fluffy, instead of this angsty stuff! They deserve it, after all they've been through, don't you think?

I hope all of you are enjoying the holidays! Thank you very much for reading!
