There was a knock at the door. Chloe glanced at the time. 9:00pm. Only one person used to come over this late and he never knocked. She hadn't noticed how odd it had been that Lucifer would come over this late until he had stopped doing it. She hadn't noticed how strange it was that he just came over to spend time with her, asking or suggesting nothing in return. She found that she missed it.
Chloe wrapped a dressing gown around her body and debated grabbing her gun but decided against it.
She quietly walked down the stairs.
"Who is it?" She said behind the door.
"It's me," Lucifer replied softly.
Chloe opened the door, her eyes wide.
"I just wanted to talk," Lucifer said.
Chloe raised her eyebrows, for anyone else that would have been normal but it was the most un-Lucifer-like sentence she had ever heard.
She nodded and stepped aside for him to walk through.
"I'm sorry for coming over so late."
Another surprising sentence.
"Who are you and what have you done with Lucifer Morningstar?" Chloe asked smiling.
"Ha. Ha." He responded sarcastically.
"That's better," Chloe said.
"Do you want to sit down?"
"Ah okay."
"I wanted to say I'm sorry for ghosting you... again."
Chloe nodded.
"It was just, well you were taking it so well. You know the whole me really being the devil thing, that I thought you were only being nice because you didn't want to hurt me or because you were scared. I thought I'd make it easier for you to pull away by pulling away first. I didn't think I could stomach your pity or your fear. I just thought you were too nice to say no.
Chloe was in shock.
"Firstly, do you know me?" She said once she recovered enough to speak.
"Secondly, I don't know if I'm more hurt that you didn't trust me enough that I would love you no matter what, or that your first response to someone showing you kindness is that they don't really mean it."
Lucifer was just staring at her frozen. She didn't mean it. She didn't even realise she said it. Love. Love. Love.
"Lucifer?" Chloe said when he didn't respond.
"Uhh, I simply don't know what to say."
Chloe gave him a characteristic eye roll.
"You didn't really mean love, did you? You just said it automatically or… or… or like your offspring loves chocolate cake," he blurted out.
Chloe felt her heart race as she tried to remember what she said.
"I didn't realise... but I meant it. I meant every word," Chloe whispered.
