The truth about the truth: it hurts, so we lie: lying to protect someone

Why had she the unfortunate task of telling him?

"Because you are his closest friend."

But surely she could tell him, it was her responsibility after all.

"I can't bring myself to face him. I don't want to hurt him."

So she sent her instead.

"He won't be so hurt if you tell him."

She must not know him that well. Didn't she know how much he loved her?

"This may be the only opportunity I have. I can't let it pass me by."

So she'd risk his happiness for her own.

"You just don't understand."

She was right, she didn't.

The lost, broken-hearted look on his face nearly shattered the ginger's heart, but she promised herself she would stay strong. The last thing he needed was her crying.

"She said that this was a great opportunity for her, one that may not come around again," the girl added. Even to her own ears the words sounded pressed and hollow, as if this bad news was effecting her as much as him, as if her whole world was crashing around her too.

The silence was suffocating; she continued on to avoid it. "She still loves you, Yusuke, there is no doubt about that; she will be back."

At her last words, the dark haired boy looked up in what the girl could only describe as hope. It was as if she had said the right words to bring him out of his depressed stupor and back to the present. He stood to his feet and left the room without a word, shutting the door to his room and locking it.

The girl sighed loudly and ran shaky fingers through her hair, instantly regretting her last words.

Would she be back?

She offered her a sad smile before turning away. "However you tell him, don't lie and get his hopes up."

Easier said than done, she hadn't been here to see just how hurt he had been; she hadn't seen just how broken he had become.

"You are the only person who can really bring him back from this; the only one that could ever bring him back when we all thought he was too far gone, and for that I hate you."

The feeling was mutual.
