This is a missing scene from "An Affair of Honor." Just how did Diego get out of that woodshed?

Escape

Despite the gravity of his situation, Diego couldn't help but the see the irony in it.

This is the second time this has happened now. Shouldn't that tell you something?

Diego rolled his eyes, momentarily forgetting the bonds and gag. Good grief, Sergeant, what have you gotten me into this time?

Still, he could hardly blame the soldier for his actions. The public Diego would never have survived a duel; Señor Avilla was a highly skilled swordsman. Unfortunately, the Sergeant didn't realize his interference had completely thrown Diego's own carefully laid plans into confusion.

As Diego maneuvered his feet around within reach, he reflected, I suppose the Sergeant acted for the same reason my father did in Monterey – FATHER! Suddenly Diego stiffened in alarm. When I can't be found, Father will feel obligated to act in my stead – especially after last night's warning. Eyes narrowing, Diego reached for the knife he had carried in his boot ever since that fateful day of amnesty. This makes it all the more imperative that I escape.

With renewed energy Diego worked at his bonds, nearly groaning as he realized that by the amount of sunlight filtering through the wall beside him it was nearly noon. Suddenly the ropes around his wrists loosened. He swiftly worked through the last strands.

Finally! Diego pulled his sore wrists from behind his back and jerked the gag from his mouth before bending over to free his ankles, ignoring the stab of pain that shot through his head as he did so. He stood, then very nearly fell down again.

Slowly, he reminded himself, forcing himself to take deep, even breaths. You'll do nobody good if you collapse all over again. He stood for a moment, leaning against the wall of the shed, before things steadied again.

It was two miles walk between the hacienda and the old woodshed, but Diego in his agitation barely noticed. Once he had arrived at the hacienda he went straight through the patio garden and into the sala.

Once there, however, he stopped. Diego took a deep breath. What now?

Almost immediately he came up with the answer. Diego's appearance now would only serve to complicate things. But Zorro. . .

Diego slipped through the cabinet entrance and up to the secret room, where he hastily changed into the black clothes. As he slipped on the gloves he winced as they rubbed against his bruised wrists.

Well, he thought wryly, at least no one will be able to see them.

He quickly turned and hurried down the passages to the cave.

Tornado whickered at him as he entered. Zorro noted wryly that the black stallion was unsaddled – undoubtedly Bernardo and his father had left immediately for the pueblo once they discovered his unplanned absence. I'll have to hurry. He quickly hoisted the saddle onto Tornado's back.

As Zorro flew up the road to Los Angeles, an odd thought crossed his mind.

Well, thanks to the sergeant I now have an iron clad alibi.

A burst of laughter leapt from his lips as horse and rider raced the wind.
