In this chapter (AU), Jane and Maura have gone their separate ways for work, and they have not been in contact for more than 3 years.
Jane's POV:
I've missed you so much, and I can't believe that you are sitting next to me right now.
This is surreal.
I move my chair slightly to your side so that our knees and thighs touch. My right arm reaches over your shoulders, and I give you a tight side hug. I nuzzle my face to your neck and long hair. I smell you.
I've missed your smell.
inhale. exhale. inhale.
Your smell relaxes me.
I smile and I grin sheepishly. I can't believe we are back together. Am I dreaming?
"Am I dreaming? Is this real?" I asked you.
You turned to me and laughed,
"Of course this is real, silly goose!" I've missed your laughter too.
At that moment, I believed you. For a moment, I was truly happy and content because I was with you and you were with me.
But I woke up, and I realized it was just a dream.
Heartbroken. My heart aches for you.
