A/N: This is a story that doesn't exactly go far with the whole "Mystery Dungeon" part, but this is a story that takes place in the PMD universe. Remember this story is indeed M, so anything can happen. First chapter will be in a few days, this is not long at all, and for good reason.
Prologue
I clutched my cross necklace, and closed my eyes, praying that me and my fellow soldiers would be ok. I am currently in the back of a truck, ready to lead my squadron into the fight. "We are close to the warzone!" The driver yelled to us, and a lot of us got more anxious. I closed my eyes, and a minute later we all jumped up a bit as the vehicle stopped.
"Alright, we need to provide a distraction for a flank," I informed my comrades, one of the privates spoke against the idea.
"Why do we have to be bait?" I laughed at that notion "We are not bait, we are simply distracting while giving them hell. We are on top of a hill, so we will leave our snipers here, and run down the side of the hill, we have it covered with a wooden wall, but be wary that it is only wood. Then we will be at the defens-" our driver groaned. "Just get out already, I don't wanna die from monologue!" I sighed and opened the back door, motioning for the other 13 in my squad to come out. I was the highest rank in our little squad, Lieutenant John.
I ran up the hill, and our snipers went prone at the cliffside, allowing for the camouflage suits to blend them into the grass. I noticed it was about night out, this meant the walk down the side of the hill might have some casualties. The truck drove off leaving us to ourselves for now. To the side of the cliff was a steep way down, but we would be sliding down as to not hurt ourselves. I took the initiative, and one by one my comrades followed silently, we were like wolves hunting our prey.
I heard someone talk in another language, and before I knew it the wooden wall was getting battered by bullets, which unfortunately killed the private sliding down. The rest were not gonna go down until they were safe, so I took the initiative. I walked around the wall which ended a few feet down the slide, and noticed two enemies a 12 feet away. I checked my phone that the army provided, and texted the coordinates to my sniper buds. A few seconds later I heard two soft clicks, and the men were down. I motioned for the rest of my squad to follow, and the last 5 came down one by one. We saw the makeshift cover spread around the field, it was the ground of a battle we had lost 4 months ago.
We all got in cover, if our intel was right this was where a convoy would appear in, and another platoon was gonna flank them with true firepower. I could only hope the plan would work as I tightly held my AK47 out of anxiety. 15 minutes later a lot of cars came to the grassy field, and I heard a lot of talking in Korean. This was the time… we needed to distract for about 5 minutes. Whoever made this plan has too much damn faith in us. It's a convoy of 100 men versus 13, if we all die in 5 minutes the mission will likely fail.
I shook my head to get rid of the thoughts of failure, and aimed at a guard hanging around one of the trucks. I aimed down the sights, and once I was sure I had it right, BANG! The enemy was down. This led to the entire team to start the fight, and a bunch of soldiers from the enemy vehicles rushed out, and I saw that there were far more than 100 soldiers, the math was wrong! I saw 8 people aiming at my cover, so I jumped out of it to another, shooting wildly in the leap, hoping to do something. One of my men got shot, and I got angry. "Men, throw all the grenades you've got!" I yelled to my right, where a majority of my men were in this mess. Some of the enemies got the memo that something was happening, and leapt into cover as well. I took out two grenade, twisted off the top and chucked it across the field, where it landed around 6 running men, 4 died and two were mortally wounded.
My comrades did something similar, but even after taking down around 30 soldiers, they didn't seem to be going down, and- "FUCK! THEY ARE GONNA DO WHAT WE DID!" I called out to my teammates, and we all scurried back. I was the last one to run to the wooden wall which would cover us somewhat from the loud bangs and lights, but something unfortunate happened.
I saw another in front of me about to get shot. This guy was Malcolm, and from what I knew about him, he had a lot of family and even kids to take care of. Meanwhile I didn't have a wife, a relationship or kids. My first thought was that he was gonna die, but in my head something clicked.
He had something big to live for, I didn't.
I ran in front of his running body so that when he was getting shot at, they hit me instead. It stung at first before I slipped into unconsciousness. I could only hope it went well for my comrades.
First chapter will be in a few days, this is not long at all, and for good reason. John may have been a lieutenant but he was lonely. He had barely any friends, and he was scared of friendships in the army as it could make a death much worse. Also, it was never in the plan to flesh out this part of his life.
