He's trying not to think about it.
Rodney's cursing up a storm at the back of the jumper, so he knows he's not alone in his need for distraction. But whilst Rodney's got the engines to keep him occupied, John only has the view outside the jumper window. Not exactly prime material for 'I Spy'.
The problem with being stranded light years away from Atlantis is that it's easy to forget that the city even exists. True, it's always there, in the far recesses of his mind, but looking out at the endless vista of space before him, John can trick himself into forgetting. It's like forgetting your extremities until you need them, or those crazy magic eye puzzles he's always hated, except with Atlantis, if he crosses his eyes, the place disappears. Any other day it would be a good way to pass the time. Today he needs the focus.
There's a loud clank at the far end of the jumper, and then a thud, and then Rodney's muttering fiercely, and John has to restrain himself from asking how it's going. There's a buzz of power, and then a despondent fizz, and Rodney curses again. John clenches his fists, wills himself not to speak.
Rodney pulls another cable; the jumper shudders half-heartedly, and John tries not to think of Wraith darts piercing the heart of the city.
end.
