He didn't have to see him on the trapeze to suspect, at first… but when he was up there, performance façade and all, Jack knew. The Last Grayson was back… and he had grown spectacularly.
"heh." He shrugs, doubting himself for a split second, but recovering just as fast, "Time to move on." He says simply, feigning a casual handshake… a hug felt more natural to him, but here, he had to remind himself that he wasn't-
"Well, Dick…" Jack pauses, a genuine smile laid beautifully over his aged eyes, and Dick's heart skips a beat, "… I'll miss you." It's an accidental distortion, there's no way he could…
"It's Dan. Dan Danger." He objects, a little too quickly.
"Son," Jack began, placing his hand at the boy's shoulder, "You've grown. But some things never change…" he paused, crouching a little to look the boy in the eyes, "Like the sight of a Grayson, on the trapeze."
He watched the sudden surprise flicker over Dick's face, marveling at the change in his features. Boy, how the years had passed.
"You can't fake that, can't hide it." He stated confidently, watching the understanding roll over the boy's eyes, somehow knowing Dick would appreciate hearing that from him, "So," he straightens his back, "do an old ring master one last favor?"
The boy smiles, and it's then that Jack realizes just how much he had missed the Grayson family, not just as an act.
Dick swallows, unfamiliar with the emotions of being reunited with ol' Jack, but happy, nonetheless. Jack had recognized him, probably from the start, and Dick felt a place close to home in his heart that he hadn't in a long, long time. Since he was last home, at the circus.
A prideful smile bordering on challenge accepted came over Dick's face, replaying what was once a familiar dance between the two old friends of challenge placed and challenge met. Jack almost laughed in assurance, this was definitely Dick Grayson. The boy was all right.
Dick allowed himself this one moment, of pure joy, at an unofficial reunion with his old ring master… one of his last connections to his family. And that last performance, the farewell of the Daring Dangers, was the first and last performance he enjoyed since it all ended, and then began.
He didn't think himself to be much of a spiritual person, at least, not in most senses of the word, anyway. Tonight though, tonight he knew his family was there. He could see their faces, and hear their voices… he could feel them with him. And he allowed himself to be comforted by this.
Dick allowed himself, just this once, to not be Robin. To be a Flying Grayson, just one last time.
