Disclaimer: I don't own Maximum Ride. Or Fang (though I sort of wish I did . . . ).

"Iggy!" I yelled angrily. My wings were beating furiously fast, as fast as they could without me technically going into overdrive, and I was gaining on him. "It'll never work! That's such a stupid idea! What the heck do you think you're doing? Fang and I have been working on this problem, and we know how to solve it! You know the plan-just do your part, and it'll all work out!"

Iggy shook his head stubbornly. He could be so pigheaded when he thought he was right. "Your plan won't work. I'm right-my idea's not stupid; it's our only chance."

"You idiot!" I shrieked, beyond reasoning now. Wow, I was shrill. Note to self: Make yells more gruff, less girly. "You're just going to screw everything up and blow our cover! You don't know what you're doing! Who's the leader here? Fang and I have a plan! You can't just go making up your own rules, because it won't work!"

"I'm right, Max" was all Iggy said before he folded his wings and dove earthward, too fast for me to even have a chance to stop him.

"Short leash today?" Fang's soft, quiet voice came from right above me. I let my eyes follow Iggy, shooting downward like an arrow, and sighed, unsure of what to make of the tangle of emotions in my chest.

Fang flew carefully, expertly losing altitude until I had to synchronize my wingbeats with his to keep our wings from colliding. Instinct, born of years of flying with pranksters like Gazzy and Iggy, told me to drop out of range of his feet, but I knew Fang well enough to know that I had nothing to fear-at least, nothing out of the ordinary, which was pretty much everything anyway. Despite being comfortable with Fang, though, I was a bit apprehensive. What was he trying to do? We didn't have time to kiss right now. In fact, we should have been discussing plan changes already.

Fang reached down and squeezed my shoulders briefly before letting go and surging upward a few feet, back to a normal distance from me. Warmth-rare at this altitude-shot through me, and I felt my stomach turn over. I tilted my wings until I was nearly flying sideways and turned my head so I could smile gratefully up at Fang. I was so glad he was back.

"So, we've lost Iggy and our cover may soon be blown," Fang summarized, forcing me to focus. "Where does that put our plan?"

I tilted my wings once more so that I was flying normally again. Back to saving the world.
