Addie sighed looking at the decorations she had been working so hard to put up. It was her and her boyfriend's first Christmas together, and she wanted it to be perfect. They were going to decorate the tree later that night, when he came to visit.
She never, ever pushed off decorating this late, but she had a good reason. Okay well, she really didn't, but she liked to think spending time with Zack had been a little more important.
She put up the last of the Santa Clause decorations on the wall and breathed a sigh of relief, getting a few minutes to herself. Addie began to smell something, as if something was burning. And that's when it hit her, she forgot all about the cookies she was baking.
She ran to the kitchen, hoping to salvage whatever she could out of the mess. As she opened the oven, she knew all chances were lost. Her batch of sugar cookies had been burnt to a crisp.
She threw the tray on the stove and leaned against the counter willing the tears away. It was stupid, they were just cookies, nothing to cry over. But the way she looked at it, was it really Christmas without cookies? She didn't like the fact there wouldn't be any warm, freshly baked cookies for Zack when he came over.
She heard him coming in the door and tried to hide the evidence that she had actually cried over cookies, but as soon as he walked into the kitchen she only cried harder. Zack noticed the burnt mess on the stove and chuckled to himself, before gathering Addie in his arms and letting her cry until she finally calmed down.
When Addie pulled away she noticed exactly what Zack was wearing and burst out laughing. He was in a cheesy brown sweater and had on Reindeer antlers.
She pulled him into a kiss and when they broke apart she asked, "Going for the Reindeer look, huh?"
He laughed, "Well I don't work this look everyday babe," he said, winking at her.
XxX
All night they trimmed the tree, talked, kissed, and enjoyed a nice dinner together. They even baked a new batch of cookies. As the night was winding down, they sat on the couch together to cuddle.
Christmas carols played softly in the background as they talked. Zack looked at Addie and asked, "So what would you like for Christmas?"
"You realize Christmas is tomorrow and every store is closed, right?" Addie asked, raising her eyebrow at him.
"Yeah I know, and don't worry I already have your gift babe. I was just wondering if anything on your list has changed, was all."
"You know, thinking back on my list, I wanted all that stuff, but I don't really need it. I have everything I need. My family, friends, someone who loves me. That's all I will ever truly need," she said with a smile.
Zack could only smile down at the girl in his arms. Addie got comfortable in his arms and slowly drifted to sleep. Zack pulled the blanket hanging on the back of the couch. He noticed the clock said 12:01. As he got comfortable, he placed a soft kiss on Addie's lips and whispered, "Merry Christmas," in her ear before slowly falling asleep himself.
