It was dark, so dark. And freezing cold, too. Jack put his hands out and felt at the rock walls around him. A tunnel. He was in a tunnel. Slowly, light pervaded the darkness, and he was able to see. The tunnel sloped down in front of him. He walked forward a little way and caught sight of writing on the wall. "Gun Emplacement Six." Well, he didn't want to go there.
He turned uphill and walked until he found an open doorway. He entered, right into the middle of a group of soldiers, laughing, talking, smoking, drinking and playing cards. When they saw him, a few waved off lazy salutes, before returning to their game.
From the lack of military discipline and the accents floating around, Jack surmised that he was in the company of Australians. Who said life never gave you surprises? If only this one was a little more pleasant. Jack had not inclination whatsoever to live – and die – his way through the second worlds war – again.
"You," HE complained, "Are as unreliable as the TARDIS." He shook the wrist-strap in annoyance, "Honestly!"
