From the Beginning
Dean watched his mom leave to go check on Sammy. They'd been reading Curious George together
and he wanted to know what happened to the balloon! Silly baby, Dean thought, pouting.
Unable to resist, Dean tiptoed across the hall to Sam's room. Standing beside his mom, he looked
closely at the wiggling, crying thing. Chewing on his lip, Dean held out his hand to let Sam grab one
of his fingers.
"You need to go to sleep now, Sammy. 'Cause I have to find out what happens to George so we can
read it together when you get big, too."

"No!"
The first thing Sam noticed was how oddly Dean's voice echoed. But he could feel Dean's arms
around him, grounding him against something warm, familiar.
"Dean?"
"Stay awake, man." Dean's voice was rough, as though he'd been yelling.
Sam huddled against him, confused and lightheaded, eyes drooping. "Cold."
"Sammy! Wake up!" Dean's voice was ragged, frightened. "Fall asleep and I'll put Nair in your
shampoo again, you hear me?"
He wanted to comfort him. Dean shouldn't be scared. "'s okay."
But Dean began shaking instead, whispering, "Please, Sammy, I'm beggin' ya. Don't leave me."
"'m sorry."
And darkness returned.
