Losing Everything
It had been an ordinary day for Rachel Logan-Roth. She had learnt to show emotion without her powers mucking up. And was now married to The Changeling, formerly Beast Boy, she had fully retired from the superhero business but he was still a part-time hero. He only worked when it was absolutely needed and the full-time heroes respected that. It was on this day that she got the call. The call no wife wants to get. She knew it was urgent because it was a call on her Titans Communicator and nobody ever called on that since she retired. She pulled it out of the drawer and flipped it open fully planning to give whoever was on the other end a stern telling-off when she saw it was Vic and his human eye was red and moist like he had been crying.
"Vic, what's wrong?" She asked worried.
"Rae, you need to come down here right away", he replied. That's when Raven realized what had happened and in an instant she was using her rusty powers to sense where they were.
When she got there she looked around and took in the scene. There was blood everywhere along with quite a few injured super-heroes and sadly, four body-bags. She spotted Vic sitting over one of the body-bags and that's when she realized she didn't see Karen anywhere. She ran over and hugged him tight. He was crying and he started crying more when he looked at her face.
"Rae, we under-estimated how many there were. Every villain we've ever faced, and more. They took us by surprise. Roy lost an arm and Kori may be paralyzed from the waist down, even if she does ever walk again she will never fly," He wailed. "And Artemis, Cheshire got to her. She didn't stand a chance. Imagine, killed by your own sister. Karen, she got cornered by Kyd Wykkyd and Angel. I didn't make it in time." His voice broke and he took a deep breath before continuing, "Jenny, she got beaten to death by the whole HIVE five, some sort of sick pay-back for reverting and becoming a hero all those years ago. And Gar, S-Slade and Terra got him, I don't know exactly how."
That was enough for Raven to breakdown. Every person who had been a big part in her wedding was dead or injured. Jinx (her bridesmaid who's daughter had been the flower girl), Artemis (her other bridesmaid who's son had been the ring-bearer), BumbleBee (her third bridesmaid), Starfire (her maid of honour), Red Arrow (Speedy, one of Gar's best man) and The Changeling (her husband).
*One Week Later*
Rachel was standing in front of six coffins with one arm around Vic the other around Kori, doctors had told her there was no way she would ever be able to walk again. Roy's arm had become infected and he hadn't made it to the hospital in time. He died in the ambulance. Wally had committed suicide after finding out his wife and ex-girlfriend had both died on a mission he should have been at if only he hadn't been fighting with Jenny. This had left his son Wallace Joseph West jr. (Artemis's son) and daughter Annabelle Sofia West (Jinx's daughter) parentless and Rachel had adopted them. Their friends were to be buried alongside Richard Grayson, also known as NightWing (Robin), who had died at the hands of Slade five years back.
They said there final goodbyes and watched as the coffins were lowered into the ground. Kori placed another flower at Dick's grave while Vic and Rachel each placed flowers at the other six grave-stones. Rachel was upset that Gar was gone but knew that in just under nine months time she would have someone to remind her of him everyday. She rubbed her stomach and smiled a small smile.
"Good-bye Gar," she whispered sadly to the grave in front of her before turning to wheel Kori toward the T-car.
