After the Gun Went Bang, Bang, Bang

AN- Many thanks to Tess Gerritsen for creating the characters of Jane, Maura, Frank, and Angela and for allowing writers to borrow them to play with. All characters belong to Ms. Gerritsen and TNT respectively.

Dr. Maura Isles hated this part of being a doctor. Give her a cold body in the lab with a scalpel and a Dictaphone and she was on her element. Put her in front of a family seeking answers about their loved ones and she quickly became a nervous, anxious mess. It had been like that since medical school. Maura would practice what she would say to the waiting family before even attempting to face them. After one particularly disastrous encounter an advisor had recommended that maybe pathology was where her strengths lay. It was good advice and Maura had grown in her career and now had one of the finest pathologist reputations in the country.

The family sitting in front of her wasn't just any family. Frank Sr. and Angela Rizzoli sat straight backed in the hard plastic chairs of Boston General Hospital looking at Isles to tell them what happened to their daughter Jane. Maura felt the nerves curl like icy fingers around her chest as she looked at the crucifix and tissues Angela clutched in her hands, her eyes searching Maura's face desperately wanting an answer for the horrors that were now enveloping their family.

Maura swallowed hard before beginning willing her voice not to crack as she delivered the news, "The paramedics stabilized her at the scene. The bullet hit so many organs and the damage was too great. She died on the operating table." Maura felt her heart break with those last words. "I'm so sorry," she said, her voice cracking.

Angela collapsed into her husband's chest a deep guttural wail stuck in her chest, "Jane oh my Janie," she cried into her husband's side. Frank Sr. sat staring straight ahead, the color drained from his face. It was all too much for Maura to take. Quickly excusing herself she made her escape. She was desperate to get back to her lab, back to the quiet solitude of the dead. Back to the place where things made sense to her. Back to where soon the body of her best friend would be waiting for her.
