Word Count: 620 (ish)

Lily sat in class, lazily enjoying the sun shining through the dusty windows. Exams were over, it was the last week of term, and she didn't want to think about the Goblin War any more. Out of the corner of her eye she watched the Marauders suspiciously, as they seemed to be peering over an old book, and they were never to be trusted when they were pretending to be studious. For the moment though, she was content to sit back and let Professor Binns voice drift past her.

She was taken completely by surprise when the ribbon landed on her desk and looked around to see James focusing on it. She turned back and watched as the ribbon elegantly expanded, curling until it took the shape of a flower.

A red carnation. A symbol of admiration.

She smiled to herself and picked up the second piece of ribbon still wrapped around the stem of the carnation. She had to concentrate to make it take the shape she wanted (Potter was always better than her at transfiguration) but eventually she had a flower almost identical to the first. Hers however, was not red. She sent the striped carnation flying over to James who grinned until he consulted the heavy book he had been flicking through.

A striped carnation. Rejected love.

He scowled and pulled out another ribbon. She had to admire his persistence, clearly he had been listening when she and Alice were talking about muggle flower meanings. She wasn't quite sure why he had gone to so much effort, but perhaps this was yet another mind game to embarrass her in front of everyone.

The purple chrysanthemum that floated through the air towards her, a sign of optimism made her smirk, although she was careful not to let James see her amusement. She returned an iberis, for indifference, and watched as Remus tried to console James.

The next flower he sent, a magnolia (perseverance) caught Alice and Marlene's attention. While they whispered to each other and smirked at Lily, she curled the ribbon into a delphinium (haughtiness) and floated it back across the room to him.

The yellow tulip (hopeless love) that was returned almost immediately left a smile on her face and Alice nudged her and giggled. By now almost the whole class (at least, those who were still awake) were watching the silent exchange in bemusement. She had to think a while before she came up with a response and the amaranthus (heartlessness) elicited a dejected groan from James.

Alice scolded her for her cruelty but before they could continue Professor Binns dismissed the class and Lily stood up, collecting her bouquet. At the door James stopped her, handing her his half of the flowers along with a single rose. It's pink and white petals made her blush and he looked at her with hope in his eyes. In answer she gave him a small posy of white violets and turned away, almost immediately regretting it.

She was hurrying away, not wanting anyone else to realise her humiliation when James inevitably laughed at her idiocy. She had never meant to get carried away but he was so easy to relax around and she had let down her guard. Probably all the marauders were now sniggering behind her back. She heard footsteps behind her and groaned inwardly, preparing for the inevitable let down. Blushing, she turned to face him and he looked at her in confusion. He offered her a peach rose, watching her carefully.

Her hand trembled as she accepted it and he stared at her in disbelief. She smiled sweetly and he pulled her towards him, entwining their hands as their lips met.

The last few flowers are as follows:

Pink and white roses: Love forever

White violets: Let's take a chance

Peach rose: Sealing the deal/ a new start together
