Paranormal

What does that word exactly bring us? Is it a curse or a gift?

Those questions were the least said and thought. It was stuffed at the back of everyone's mind, seemingly forgotten. It was a miracle that someone remembered those questions that one cold night.

She couldn't sleep.

Two boys kept popping up in her mind. One was definitely against the paranormal while the other kept defending himself and his belief that the paranormal was wondrous.

Was it really wondrous?

"Science is superior to the paranormal. It is intelligent, it states tangible facts, and it tells us exactly what we need to know."

No matter what Mai thinks, she couldn't say that her other son wasn't right. Science gives truths with proofs that everyone can see. Everyone can relate to.

Spirits crawling every corner of the earth is quite frightening to hear. They linger around with they're so-called 'unfinished business'. Isn't it much better that the paranormal ceased to exist?

Mai laughed at herself.

She even doubted her own profession. She really couldn't help but recall the supposedly debate of her dear twin boys.

"Laughing alone makes you look like an idiot." Her husband suddenly entered the balcony.

Mai chuckled, "I couldn't help but laugh at the two boys arguing over science and the paranormal." She then continued with a question, "I couldn't help myself but ask: Is paranormal a gift or a curse?"

Naru looked quizzically at his wife; it has been a rare case that Mai would ask a non-idiotic question.

"What do you think?" Naru asked.

She sighed, "I think it would be more of a curse. Ghosts constantly remind us of death. When we see our loved ones, no more than a transparent entity, it reminds us of pain. Our memories that we shared with them will stay as exactly as they are, no more, no less. Science may be harsh but isn't the paranormal ways of stating truths much frightening?"

Naru decided to stay silent. In a way it was true. Science may be harsh and straightforward when it comes to facts but facts are…simply facts.

Living a life knowing the explained and proved truth was easier than chasing such entities and unknowns of the afterlife that might drive one person insane.

Mai smiled and tilted her head a little to the left, "But…isn't it still wonderful? Science is there to help living people while here we are, to help the dead."

Naru smiled, a habit he does so often when alone with his family, and said, "Yes, it is wonderful."

And that was why they took the job to cleanse the lingering ghosts around.

The doctors of the dead.

That they were.
