A/N: I think I'm good on cats for ShadowClan, but all the other clans still need cats.
I guess that is all, I hope you enjoy :)
With her eyes trained on the shiny black beetle in front of her, Choughkit crept closer to her prey, not allowing it to leave her sight for a second. Her tail stayed still, and straight out behind her, just the way Cloudymist had instructed Aspenpaw to do, when she was teaching him how to hunt.
I can't wait to get a mentor of my own to teach me how to hunt. Choughkit thought.
Often, she watched the warriors with their apprentices, and she was able to learn a few things, but it was nothing like having her own mentor. Someone who could focus all of their attention on her.
Just as she was about to leap on the beetle, her brother, Rookkit, let out a gasp, and jumped over her, landing right on the beetle.
"Hey," she protested, "That was my prey!"
However, instead of delivering the killing blow to the beetle, he stepped aside, and let it scurry away, causing Choughkit's stomach to twist with rage. How could he just let the prey get away like that?
"Look at this!" he squeaked, seemingly not noticing the beetle that he had just let escape. Even though she was angry at him, Choughkit padded over to see what Rookkit was so interested in.
"It's a blade of grass, you called us over here for a blade of grass?" their sister, Ravenkit, asked with her eyes narrowed.
Their other sister, Magpiekit, rolled her eyes, but didn't say anything.
"It's not just any blade of grass," Rookkit pointed to it with his paw, "It's broken!"
"So what?" Ravenkit spat.
"What if it's an omen? What if," Rookkit glanced over at the apprentice's den, "What if StarClan is trying to tell me that Grasspaw is going to get injured?"
Magpiekit mrrowed.
"If StarClan was going to send omens to one of us, it wouldn't be you, Runtkit."
"Yeah, and didn't you say that RiverClan was planning on attacking us, because you found a wet stone in the camp? It had just rained, toad-brain," Ravenkit snorted.
Her brother looked so disconcerted, that Choughkit almost felt bad for him, however, she remembered how he had let her beetle get away, and all feelings of sympathy disappeared.
"Not everything is an omen, Rookkit," their mother, Flowerbird, meowed gently, padding over with their brother, Crowkit, not far behind. He's such a kit! Choughkit thought, glaring at Crowkit. He'd probably request Flowerbird to be his mentor, because he never left her side.
"Sometimes, a blade of grass, is just a blade of grass."
"But, what if it's a real omen, and Grasspaw gets hurt?" Rookkit asked.
Flowerbird sighed, and rested her muzzle on the top of his head.
"If it's that important, StarClan will send an omen to Bearclaw, he is the medicine cat after all."
"Do you think Bearclaw will let me be his apprentice when I'm old enough? I've already learned so much!" Rookkit's yellow eyes shined, "I know that dock is used for scratches, coltsfoot is for cats that have trouble breathing, and-"
"And no one cares!" Ravenkit spat.
"Now Ravenkit, be nice to your brother, at least he's showing an interest in something besides the fresh-kill pile," Icefall, their father, mrrowed, as he padded over with a lizard dangling from his jaws.
"The plumpest one in the pile," he told Flowerbird, as he set it down by her paws.
"Thank you," Flowerbird meowed, nuzzling her mate. She then turned her attention to the lizard.
"Come on kits, lets eat!"
"How do you expect one tiny lizard to feed all of us?" Ravenkit asked.
"Oh, are all the kits eating fresh-kill now?" Icefall asked, his eyes drifting over to Crowkit.
Flowerbird nodded.
"Yes, Crowkit still nurses from time to time, but he also eats fresh-kill."
"Very well," Icefall turned his attention to his kits, "Come on Ravenkit, I'll let you take your pick of the fresh-kill pile, as long as you promise not to pick out the biggest piece of prey, or more than one, every cat needs to eat," he meowed sternly.
"I won't," Ravenkit muttered, rolling her amber eyes, before following their father over to the fresh-kill pile.
"Wait for me!" Magpiekit exclaimed, as she ran after them.
She's fast, Choughkit thought to herself, she'll probably be able to catch rabbits. She didn't know of anyone who could catch rabbits in her clan. However, she heard that the cats in WindClan were amazing rabbit catchers.
In her clan, ShadowClan, they mostly caught frogs, toads, lizards, and sometimes the occasional bird, never any rabbits though.
I wonder what they taste like, she thought, she had never seen a rabbit before, but she knew that they had a furred pelt, just like her own.
She had never eaten anything with fur before, and she wasn't sure she wanted to, she got enough fur-balls grooming Ravenkit and Rookkit, both of whom had longer fur than her and her other littermates.
Rookkit's fur was only a little bit longer though, however, Ravenkit's was super long, and it made her look bigger than she already was.
"Look what Ravenkit picked out," Magpiekit meowed, as both she-kits came padding back into the nursery. In Ravenkit's mouth, was a huge toad.
"I thought Icefall told you not to pick the biggest from the pile," Flowerbird meowed sternly, as she pushed one of the lizard's legs over to Crowkit.
"It wasn't the biggest, it was the second biggest," Ravenkit meowed, her words muffled by the toad, which she had already begun to eat.
"Well, aren't you going to share?" Flowerbird asked, indicating Mapgpiekit with her tail, who was staring at the toad with drool actually dripping out of her mouth.
"Why should I?" Ravenkit growled, clutching the toad protectively in her claws, which Choughkit thought looked pretty big for a kit, "Magpiekit went to the fresh-kill pile with me, she should have gotten some of her own prey!"
"But I wanted to share with you," Magpiekit meowed softly.
"It's okay Magpiekit, you can share with me," Rookkit meowed, pushing his piece of lizard over to her.
"I don't want to share with you, Runtkit!" she spat.
"Oh okay."
Guilt prickled at Choughkit, as she watched her brother pad over to his nest, with his head and tail drooped. Should she have stood up for him?
No, if he wanted to make it as a warrior, he would have to learn to stand up for himself.
Same with Crowkit, and Magpiekit. She already knew that Ravenkit could make it as a warrior.
And so can I, she thought, flexing her claws.
"So, I wonder who our mentors are going to be," Ravenkit meowed, before letting out a small burp.
Choughkit blinked at her with surprise, she couldn't believe that she had eaten that whole toad already.
"I hope our mentors are best friends Ravenkit, so we can spend all of our time together!" Magpiekit exclaimed, sitting beside the larger she-kit, her hurt over the toad, apparently forgotten.
"Yeah, yeah, that'd be great," Ravenkit sighed with a dismissive flick of her tail.
"Well, I hope I get Cinderflower as my mentor, she's so nice," Choughkit meowed.
Ravenkit rolled her eyes.
"A nice mentor won't get you anywhere in life, I want a fearless mentor, who will teach me how to claw the pelt off of my enemies!" She jumped to her paws, and swiped at the air, claws unsheathed.
"Yeah!" Magpiekit exclaimed, copying their sister's move.
"Hey Magpiekit, you be a WindClan warrior, and I'll attack you!" Ravenkit exclaimed.
She sure does have the speed to be a WindClan warrior, Choughkit thought, she didn't say it out loud though. What if she did, and everyone started suspecting that she was part WindClan? They already treated Flowerbird differently, just because she was from SkyClan.
Instead of watching her sisters' mock fight, she padded over to Crowkit, who was curled up against Flowerbird.
"Hey, are you excited about being an apprentice in a few sunrises?" she asked him. She wanted to talk to someone who wasn't only interested in fighting like Ravenkit and Magpiekit, or someone who wasn't only interested in herbs and omens, like Rookkit.
"I guess so, I don't really want to leave the nursery or Flowerbird though," Crowkit sighed.
Their mother mrrowed.
"You'll be fine, and I'll be out of the nursery too, and we'll probably even go on some patrols together."
"Can we go on all of the patrols together?" Crowkit asked in a hope-filled voice.
"You will have to talk to Froglegs about that, he is the one in charge of assigning the patrols."
"Oh," Crowkit sighed, "Froglegs is kinda scary, do you think Tigerstar will let you be my mentor?"
From outside the nursery, Choughkit heard Elmwhisker, scoff, and then grumble,
"This is the seventh Tigerstar that ShadowClan has had as leader, I just hope Tigertulip doesn't become the next deputy."
"And what? Do you think you'll be the next deputy, Elmwhisker?" Icefall asked.
"It's better me, or even you, than another Tigerstar."
Choughkit turned her attention away from the two toms arguing outside, and back to her mother and Crowkit. However, to her surprise, her brother wasn't there.
"Where did Crowkit go?" she asked.
"He finally went outside the nursery, on his own! Isn't that great?" Flowerbird asked with her amber eyes shining with pride.
Choughkit nodded in her head in agreement.
A few sunrises later, Choughkit was awoken by her mother licking the top of her head.
"Get up sleepy-head, it's time for your apprentice ceremony."
Her eyes flew open, and she jumped to her paws, feeling wide awake.
"I almost forgot!" she gasped.
"This is going to be great," Ravenkit exclaimed.
Choughkit was surprised that she was already awake, Ravenkit was usually the hardest one to wake up.
"If I get Embercloud as a mentor, I'm leaving the clan," Magpiekit grumbled sleepily from beside her sister.
I hope she gets Embercloud as her mentor, Choughkit thought, but of course, she didn't say it out loud.
"You will respect whoever you get for your mentor," Flowerbird meowed sternly.
"Yes, Flowerbird," Magpiekit sighed.
"Burdock root is good for rat bites, catmint is good for greencough, lungwort is good for yellowcough," Rookkit muttered from beside her.
"Attention every cat!" Tigerstar yowled, his deep voice drowning out Rookkit's muttering. Choughkit's heart started pounding in her chest, her moment had finally arrived, she was about to be made an apprentice!
Her mother gave her one last lick to the top of the head, and Choughkit started to step out, but then she stopped, the realization that this would be the last time she ever slept in the nursery hitting her.
She turned back, and looked at her mother.
"I-I don't know if I can do this," she meowed.
Flowerbird meowed, and nuzzled her.
"Everything will be okay, you will be a warrior that ShadowClan will be proud of."
"Yeah, come on!" Ravenkit called from outside the nursery, she, Magpiekit, and Rookkit seemingly had no reluctance to leave the den they had known all their lives.
Finally, everyone, even Crowkit, was out of the nursery, and sitting among the other cats.
"Today marks a great day for ShadowClan," Tigerstar meowed from the bough of the tree that hung over his den, beside him, was Bearclaw.
"First, I would like to begin, that Bearclaw has told me that he is ready to take on an apprentice."
Beside her, Choughkit heard Rookkit take in a sharp breath.
"He has said that one kit in particular, has showed genuine interest in being a medicine cat," he continued. Choughkit looked over at Rookkit, to see that he was nearly trembling with excitement.
"Would Crowkit please come forward!"
"What?" Rookkit gasped with disbelief, "But I-, but-"
Flowerbird put her tail over his mouth, shaking her head.
Choughkit turned her attention to her other brother, to see him padding up to Tigerstar and Bearclaw, with his head held high, looking for the first time, like he wasn't just a scared little kit.
Tigerstar asked Crowkit if he promised to uphold the medicine cat code, and he said all the other things that came along with being a medicine cat apprentice.
"I do," Crowkit meowed.
"From this day forth, until you receive your medicine cat name, your name will be Crowpaw, and your mentor will be Bearclaw!"
"Crowpaw! Crowpaw!"
Choughkit's throat felt like they were going to burn after she finished cheering her brother's name along with her clanmates.
As Crowpaw padded back over to them, she heard Rookkit lowly hiss.
"I will never forgive you for this, Crowpaw."
Crowpaw shrank back, and pressed against Flowerbird, who licked the top of his ears, and congratulated.
"Ravenkit!" Tigerstar called.
When Ravenkit made her way up there, Choughkit was nearly at a loss of words, she had never seen her sister look so powerful, yet so elegant, in that moment.
Tigerstar gave the same speech to Ravenkit that he gave Crowpaw, only about being a warrior apprentice, rather than a medicine cat apprentice.
"Embercloud, will you please step forward?" Tigerstar meowed, gesturing to the white and grey tabby with his tail.
"What?" Ravenkit hissed, "You're not thinking about making EMBERCLOUD my mentor are you? I'll never learn anything from that mouse-heart!"
"Ravenpaw!" Flowerbird gasped with horror, as the other cats in the clearing started muttering to each other.
"Embercloud is a very capable mentor," Tigerstar meowed lowly, "And you will respect him."
He beckoned Embercloud up.
"I promise I'll try to be the best mentor for you that I can be," Embercloud meowed, in his voice, that was always so quiet and soft, that Choughkit had trouble hearing it, especially from where she was.
"Whatever," Ravenpaw grumbled, reluctantly touching her nose to Embercloud's.
"Bad luck," Magpiekit snorted, when Ravenpaw padded back over to them.
"Shut up," Ravenpaw hissed.
Magpiekit was the next called up, she got the same exact speech as Ravenkit, and when Cinderflower was announced as her mentor, she looked slightly off put, but she didn't have an outburst like Ravenpaw had.
"At least we can spend a lot of time together, our mentors are littermates," Magpiepaw meowed, when she padded back over.
"Choughkit!" Tigerstar called.
This is it, Choughkit thought, feeling her chest tighten until she couldn't breathe. She wondered who her mentor would be? She was a bit disappointed, that it wasn't Cinderflower, but she knew that whoever she got, she would learn a lot from them, and she would try her hardest to make them proud of her.
Just as she was about to take a step towards Tigerstar, a sharp yowl rose from the nursery.
"Tigertulip is having her kits!" Barkfur, Tigertulip's mate, gasped.
"Are you sure? It's not time yet!" Flowerbird exclaimed.
"Well, they're coming whether it's too soon or not," Bearclaw meowed, as he raced to the nursery.
"Get some chervil from my den!" he meowed to Crowpaw over his shoulder.
"I don't know what that is!" Crowpaw exclaimed.
"I'll get it, you go get a stick for Tigertulip to bite down on," Rookkit meowed.
"Why?" Crowpaw asked.
"Just do it, and hurry!"
As cats scrambled around, Choughkit stood there, wondering what she should do, should she wait for her apprentice ceremony to be completed, or should she find a way to help with Tigertulip's kitting?
"Just stay there, Tigertulip doesn't need everyone surrounding her," Froglegs meowed, answering her question, as though he could read her mind.
Choughkit nodded, an indication that she had heard what the deputy had said.
Why did those kits have to come now? During my apprentice ceremony? She thought bitterly. Now, they would get all of the attention, when it was supposed to be a special day for her and her littermates.
After waiting what seemed like forever, she felt like she couldn't wait any longer, and she slipped away, to see what was going on in the nursery, she would have to deal with Froglegs later.
Inside the nursery, she saw Tigertulip licking a small reddish brown tabby tom, an exact clone of her.
"His name is Oakkit," she meowed wearily.
"Oh no," Crowpaw meowed.
"What is it?" Tigertulip gasped, with her orange eyes opened wide in fear.
"The she-kit, I've licked her fur the opposite direction, but she isn't breathing!"
"Where's Bearclaw?" Barkfur demanded, as Tigertulip let out a wail.
"He went to his den to get some borage, he told me to lick her fur in the opposite direction until he got back!" Crowpaw wailed, "It's not my fault!"
"Move!" Rookkit hissed, knocking Crowpaw out of the way.
He bent down over the small black kit.
"Wake up toad-brain, you have to become a warrior," he hissed, thumping her lightly on her back with his paw. The tiny she-kit opened her mouth, and let out an ear splitting yowl.
"She's alive!" Tigertulip meowed, "I think Hollykit will be a perfect name for her, don't you?"
"I think Hollykit is a lovely name," Barkfur meowed, nuzzling the top of her head.
"Both the kits are okay?" Bearclaw asked, his words muffled by borage, as he padded back into the nursery.
"Yes, both kits are just fine," Tigertulip meowed her voice filled with pride for her new son and daughter.
"Okay, but I'm still going to give them a look over," Bearclaw meowed, before turning to Choughkit and Rookkit, "Don't you two have an apprentice ceremony to get back to?"
When Choughkit got back to the clearing, she could see Froglegs glaring down at her, she shrank beneath his yellow green gaze.
"Now that everything is fine, we can continue the ceremonies," Tigestar meowed.
This time, Choughkit felt no fear as she padded up to her leader.
"Choughkit, you have reached six moons of age, and it is time for you to receive your apprentice name.."
He continued giving her the same speech that he had given Magpiekit and Ravenkit.
"Elmwhisker, please come forward."
No! Not Elmwhisker, anyone but him!
She'd take any warrior over Elmwhisker, he thought he knew everything, he complained more than the elders, and he wasn't the friendliest of cats. She didn't say anything though, she didn't want Froglegs to be even more mad at her, than he already was, and she didn't want to cause a huge scene like Ravenkit had.
She held back a sigh, as she touched her nose to Elmwhisker's, and then she padded back to the clearing, nearly being deafened by her clanmates cheering her name.
Then, Tigerstar called up Rookkit. Our brother let out a heavy sigh before padding forward.
"Goldenfur!" Tigerstar called.
Goldenfur's pelt seemed to glow as she made her way up there.
Rookpaw's so lucky, Choughpaw thought, he gets Goldenfur as his mentor, and not that toad-brain Elmwhisker.
She turned her attention away from her thoughts, and back to the ceremony, to see Rookpaw and Goldenfur touch noses.
"Rookpaw! Rookpaw!" all the cats cheered.
Tigerstar jumped off the bough, officially ending the ceremonies.
This was it, she was an apprentice! Choughpaw couldn't wait to see what life had in store for her now.
