My response to Challenge #54/3 – Using the words - Cup of coffee gone cold.

He sat there for a long time. Wondering. Sat and watched as the cup of coffee
grew colder.
He hadn't meant to let it get cold. He'd wanted to drink it while it was hot,
but instead he'd simply sat and stared at it.
He just couldn't help himself.
It conjured up so many memories. Stirred up the past week's events until it
sickened him.
Images of things he'd much rather forget about, but hadn't been able to quite
bury since it had happened. They'd talked here, over cups of coffee, long and
often. He'd enjoyed the interaction as well as her company.
It was just bad luck. Bad timing. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Call it what you would. The result was still as unwelcome as it had been when
he'd first been informed.
"Hey, Emmett!"
Reluctantly, Bregman looked up into the younger face of his cameraman.
"You okay? You looked a million miles away. Colonel O'Neill is ready for your
interview. Apparently, General Hammond didn't give him much of a choice... said
he had to go ahead with it anyway."
"Is he okay, now?"
"I guess so, but he doesn't look particularly happy."
"Can you blame him? Look around, nobody's happy. They've all just lost a damn
good friend." Including me.
The younger man shrugged nonchalantly as Emmett stood. The coffee cup, still
full, was ignored.
"Aren't you gonna drink that?"
"Why? It's just a cup of coffee gone cold."
Gone cold... just like Janet Frasier has now that she is dead. Emmett sighed as he
left the commissary, unwilling to look back at the solitary reminder of the
warm, effervescent, woman he'd already considered a valued friend.
The End
