When Kagome Stopped Singing

Disclaimer: Nope, I still don't own Inuyasha

Always, she was always singing. Whether they were walking, endlessly walking in search of that bastard Naraku, when she clung to his back, or even during a battle, she'd still be singing. Sometimes she was very quiet, and it was almost a hum, and others, she'd regale the weary party at full volume, her sparkling eyes alive with energy and emotion. During a fight, it was a song of war, or encouragement, courage and strength. A warrior's song, even though she hated violence. As she tended his wounds, she'd sing for him, and only him, of healing and tenderness. After he'd been foolish enough to follow the shinidamachu, she'd sing something overly upbeat and colorful to hide her feelings, and then when no one noticed, she'd mournfully sing something tragic and beautiful that left her aching and raw. But he heard her, and asked himself time and time again how he could keep doing this to her. He'd yet to come up with a satisfactory answer, even to himself.

The times that they argued, she could blast his eardrums with the power of her voice in its righteous anger. And when they resolved things, her song was sweet and light and happy. Her singing was his secret passion, and he'd never told her why. It was the one thing he'd never complained about. She was one of his deepest weaknesses, and perhaps that was why in that accursed struggle with Naraku, he'd run to her side when she was seriously injured. He couldn't lose her. And that was why he hadn't noticed, hadn't seen, smelt or sensed it when Naraku retaliated. The attack caught him unaware, because he'd been completely wrapped up in Kagome.

So she'd cradled his head in her lap, rivers of tears streaming down her perfect face, denying the inevitable. He was dying, and they were losing. Naraku moved to end it all, but she wouldn't, she couldn't, let him take Inuyasha from her. With a soft kiss to his lips, she told him to hold on a little longer, and gripped her last arrow, her blood painting the head. She notched it, and before her blood had had time to dry, she fired. That was the only time he'd heard her sing of hatred. Impossibly, the hama no ya tore through Naraku, and drove straight into the darkest of human hearts that had started this entire thing. Naraku was completely purified, and his section of the Shikon no Tama lay glittering in the debris.

But she paid it no heed, shouting for anyone to bring her the white chest of medicinal supplies, as she returned to Inuyasha, positively terrified. Utterly spent, she fell to the ground beside him, desperate to find any sign of life.

He turned amber eyes to her, and tried to smile. He knew, he knew, and he was still too much of a coward to tell her, so instead, he said,

"Sing for me, Kagome."

Her tears and blood soaking his haori, she did as he requested, pouring out her impossible pain, and love, total love for him into her song. And he was gone. She clawed at his haori, nearly shaking him in a mad attempt to bring him back, and sang her last song perfectly and beautifully to ears that could no longer hear.
