The Path to the Torch

Some part of him always wanted
to be better, to be a mighty man
who could leave a trail of molten lava
where he walked, instead of lagging dust
behind his feet

But there was no easy path across
to the torch to light his hands
and let him burn that path;
all he could do was stare at it
afar
in the sky.
