Gentler Philosophy

Disclaimer: I don't own Naruto.

Author's Notes: Possibly the shortest piece I will ever write. I was in the middle of reading something when this just suddenly popped into my mind, and I figured I needed as much writing practice as possible. Maybe mild KakaSasu, if you're looking for it. And the damn editing on hates me now, so I can't add ruler lines. Ugh!

Sasuke once threatened to kill the person most precious to him so that he could see how obviously wrong his sentiments on revenge were. Kakashi had wanted to laugh and throw the words right back in his face.

The most precious person in Kakashi's life had once been his father, but he left Kakashi at a very tender age to continue living the shinobi way. He wished there was someone to take revenge against, someone to blame for his misery. But the person he loved and hated the most became one, and they had died together.

Kakashi loves and hates his father, just as he loves and hates Sasuke.

No matter where he is, no matter who he's with, Kakashi sees Sasuke's mind wander back to the moon and Itachi's stoic face. Sasuke's eyes will hold a momentary glimmer before he returns to himself and lets out an involuntary sigh. Kakashi doesn't know what that look is supposed to mean; regardless, he finds that the irony burns. Sasuke will never realize how much he means to anyone but Itachi, and that lusting for power is to murder part of himself. And, invariably, it's the part killed that is most precious; the part killed that was the teammate of Naruto and Sakura, the student of Kakashi. Sasuke will never realize that his statements are – to Kakashi – a cruel joke, because every day he watches him die yet is told that his notions on revenge are nothing but naïve.

Sasuke can never love them, and he will never realize how much he needs his brother. They have nothing to soothe his pain, and his comfort lies in the fact that he has someone to hate.
