Is thinking during class bad?

She was sitting at her table, spacing out as usual. Her long blond hair was everywhere, but she didn't mind. She wasn't even paying attention to the professor's lecture.

"Now it is very important that you put it in first." Professor Snape trailed on.

"Miss Lovegood," he added with a sneer as he walked over to the girl who was not paying attention. "Would you be so kind as to tell s why?" he asked, hoping to find reason to take points away from Ravenclaw.

Luna blinked and looked up at the unhappy Professor, with an erie smile on her face and an absent look in her eyes. "Good morning Professor, lovely day today isn't it?" she asked, trying to be polite.

The class burst out in muffled laughs and squeals of amusement at Luna's answer.

"Detention Miss Lovegood, after dinner. Meet me here." Snape sneered, as he turned away to continue lecturing the class on what they were to do.

After dinned, Luna made her way into the dungeons again for her detention. Snape was waiting impatiently, even though she was early.

"Good evening Professor Snape," Luna smiled absently. "Had a nice afternoon?" she asked.

Snape pointed a shaking finger at the door. "Inside." he muttered.

Luna skipped, half in a run, half seeming to float inside the room.

Snape followed her inside. "You are to explain to me what you did worn in the lesson this morning." he said.

"I did something wrong?" Luna blinked. "Really-" she trailed off, staring at the wall absently again.

"Yes you did Miss Lovegood." the professor sighed. "What were you doing during class?"

"Thinking." Luna replied simply.

"About what?" the professor asked, growing annoyed with Luna.

"I can't remember…" Luna said.

"Well why weren't you paying attention to class?" Snape sneered.

"Because I was busy thinking. Isn't that what class is for?" Luna asked, seeming disappointed.

"Well- just….no... OUT! MISS LOVEGOOD GET OUT THIS INSTANT!" Snape bellowed, annoyed with himself for being unable to answer.

Luna shrugged and walked out of the room. "Does this mean detention is over?" she asked, turning around to the door slamming shut.

"I guess so," she answered herself as she set off for her common room, skipping, singing and twirling all the way.

Back in the dungeon Snape was shaking. He began laughing. He laughed at everything, at himself, at Luna's oddities, but most of all, ha laughed at himself for sounding so stupid.

He hadn't laughed in a long time. He somewhat regretted not smiling more. He grabbed his cloak and decided to go for a walk outside. He needed time to clear his head.
